Police investigate 60 Minutes couple

South Australian police are investigating alleged payment for an interview with a father and daughter convicted of incest.

60 Minutes aired a story on Sunday about John Deaves, 61, and his daughter, Jennifer Deaves, 39, spoke of their unusual relationship and pleaded for understanding. The two had previously appeared in the South Australian edition of Today Tonight.

The pair were convicted in the South Australian District Court in Mount Gambier last month of two counts each of incest relating to the conception of their daughter, Celeste, born last year, and another baby who died in 2001, a few days after birth, from a congenital heart defect. 60 Minutes neglected to acknowledge the death of the earlier baby.

Under Australian law, convicted criminals cannot profit directly from their crimes.

Hamish Thomson, the executive producer of 60 Minutes, was quoted in News Ltd publications yesterday confirming that money was offered to the couple.

“We bought them some clothes and they might have to move town and we have offered to give them some money to cover the costs of their move, if that happens,” he was quoted as saying.

A South Australia Police spokesman said officers from the south-east district, which encompasses Mount Gambier, were looking into the case.

“The matter is being investigated but police are not commenting on it,” said a South Australia Police spokesman.

The story has also made international news.

  1. There was a docco on SBS a week or two ago about the movie Dog Day Afternoon. They were showing clips of the real armed robber from TV interviews back in the day and he made a very interesting statement concerning criminals profiting from their crimes, it was something along the lines of how the real people involved cannot make money of it, but how the Media and even Hollywood are allowed to makes millions of their lives.
