Reality mum has mixed feelings on Nine show

Rachael Hackney, mother of a My Kid’s a Star contestant, has spoken about her involvement with the Nine reality show. Her nine year old daughter Claudia is the youngest in the show. She spoke about the criticism dished out by the show’s judges, Danny Bonaduce, Marki Costello and Max Markson.

“I was always wanting them to teach me more. I got ‘wipe the make-up off your face’ but it’s a small thing and I need more guidance,” she said.

Mrs Hackney said she became involved in the show after seeing a notice at Claudia’s dance class. The pair went to auditions and found out in November Claudia was on the short list before she was accepted in December.

Mrs Hackney said she only found out about the parent participation after Claudia was accepted. It is a criticism that has been levelled at the show by media, and resulting in a “no comment” response from Nine.

She was concerned that the kids were made to perform outside their specialised areas.

“Kids that were accepted in the auditions because they were dancers were then made to sing,” she said.

“It was lucky for us Claudia could sing and dance.”

Despite the hype surrounding the show, Mrs Hackney remained adamant that she was not a frantic stage mum.

“My motto in life is nobody is the best and you learn things every day. In my eyes, every kid is a star,” she said.

Regardless of all the criticism of the show, Mrs Hackney said she and Claudia had a lot of fun living in the communal house for two weeks with other contestants.

“I’ve gotten friends for life out of this,” Mrs Hackney said. “It’s reality TV so they throw things at you left, right and centre to get a reaction.”

Mrs Hackney said she was proud of her daughter.

“I think it was very sad for the kids really, because this was meant to be their time to shine,” she said. “I’m proud of Claudia for who she is, how she handled herself and coped with everything.”

My Kid’s a Star airs Wednesdays at 7.30pm on Channel 9.
