Thankyou for the music (and the 70’s)

This week ABC’s Collectors takes a look at the 1970’s. There are lots of kitsch fashion accessories and items from purple light shades to genie bottle decanters in Italian bubble glass, tacky-placky – the height of the plastic era, velour beds and more!

And one fan, Michael Young, shows off his extraordinary ABBA memorabilia. They chat with him at his home surrounded by his collection, a few snippets of clips and other footage, and a brief word about his time running the Australian ABBA Fan Club.

For true ABBA fans, check out Michael’s website with an exclusive interview with Bjorn Ulvaeus.

Collectors airs 8pm Friday on ABC1.

Press Release:

Victoria’s Ian Ballis is so obsessed with the 70s that he has the biggest collection of items from that era in Australia. From purple light shades to genie bottle decanters in Italian bubble glass, tacky-placky – the height of the plastic era, velour beds, teak tables and a mind-blowing collection of leather jackets.

What would the 70s be without Elvis Presley? In “Show and Tell” Niccole Warren reveals an Elvis concert ticket that was scheduled for 25 August 1977, just one week after the death of Elvis. Meanwhile Victoria’s Michael Young shows us his amazing collection of yet another great 70s music act, ABBA.

Gordon Brown loves the 70s…1870s of course! The “Roving Eye” is more at home surrounded by antiques so he visits Narryna Heritage Museum in Hobart to show us the differences between the collectables from the ‘upstairs and downstairs’ lifestyle of that era.

“Under the Hammer” this week is the ultimate 70s muscle car. Right from the outset in 1978 when only 305 sedans were made, Holden fans knew the Torana A9X was something special and it has long been sought after by collectors as one of the most iconic of all Aussie muscle cars.

Professor Adrian Franklin explains how the fashions and lifestyles of the 70s influenced the style of cars that motorists were driving when he visits a massive car expo where 10 decades of cars will be on show.

This week’s “Mystery Object” has stumped the panel like never before.
