Todd McKenney loses licence

Todd McKenney has lost his licence and been fined after pleading guilty to one count of low range drink driving.

He had a blood alcohol reading of 0.05 when pulled over by Sydney police last month.

McKenney was disqualified from driving until July and fined $375 plus court costs.

“This offence attracts people from all walks of life, from all sections of the community, from the hardened criminal to the person who is, as I suspect this accused is, horrified at the prospect of having to appear in court,” Judge Paul Cloran said.

“It’s quite clear … that he should have thought about what he had had to drink.

“In all of the circumstances, this person has to be dealt with in the same way as every other person.”

McKenney’s lawyer said he had consumed a few glasses of wine in the afternoon and had slept for a few hours before drinking a vodka and tonic as he spoke to a friend on the phone.

He then went out to meet friends at the Establishment bar in the CBD and “at no time did he think when he made that decision that he had transgressed the level of alcohol that we are required to stay under”.

McKenney’s lawyer also defended the fact that he was driving without headlights on, saying the lights were operated by a censor system which appeared to be malfunctioning. He added that it was a brand new Mercedes Benz and McKenney did not realise the lights were not on.

McKenney, a judge on Seven’s Dancing with the Stars and MIX radio host, told reporters, “I think the comment is simply: ‘Don’t drink and drive’.”

McKenney was on a good behaviour licence when he was caught drink driving, and Mr Cloran said the offence was the second time McKenney had offended while on such a licence.
