2008 Fugly Award ‘winners’: Gladiators, Kyle, Coren

TV Tonight was there for the 2008 Fugly Award “Ceremony”, snarkily held today across the road from the home of the Logies, Melbourne’s Crown Casino.

The brown carpet was rolled out, the milk crate podium was there, but not a TV celebrity in sight -as is the style of the annual “anti-Logies.” In fact the empty chairs labelled David Koch, Jackie O and Daryl Somers were only warmed with the sponsored ‘Another Bloody Water.’

Fugly organiser Anthony Dever battled on against seagulls, a wayward helicopter and baffled, early morning Casino punters wondering what all the “fuss” was about. Little did they know some 11,000 votes had been cast to decide this all-expenses event.

Once again none of the “winners” including Gladiators, Kyle Sandilands and Anna Coren were anywhere to be seen. Not even the “good” category winners including Shaun Micallef, Myf Warhurst or Hamish Blake could be sighted.

To his credit, Dever ploughed on thanking them all for their contribution to the television year. We love Fuglies.

Seven Network’s recently returned high profile show Gladiators has been awarded the major gong in the TV Fugly Awards. Now in its 7th year, the internet based survey received more than 15,000 nominations and votes which decided what were the worst shows and stars on Australian television from the last 12 months.

Kyle Sandilands from Network Ten’s Big Brother and Australian Idol franchises has for the second year in a row got the gong for Worst Male TV Personality, comfortably ahead of 2006 winner Daryl Somers by almost 30% of the vote. Sandilands also beat Corey Worthington for ‘The Eddie’ an award for the Most Overexposed TV Personality as well as being named part of Australia’s TV Network Frenemies with Rove McManus after his outburst on his Sydney radio show attacking McManus.

“Kyle is almost the new Eddie McGuire when it come to The Fuglies. We might have to name a category after him next year like we did with Eddie to exclude Kyle from taking over and ruining these celebrated awards.” said The Fuglies organiser Anthony Dever.

In other categories, Today Tonight’s Anna Coren narrowly beat last year’s winner Jackie O to claim the title of Australia’s Worst Female TV Personality and for the third time, Channel Nine’s NRL commentator Phil Gould was named the Most Biased Sporting Commentator.

Corey Worthington did score an award by association in the category for Most Sensational Current Affairs Story where voters indicated that his clash with A Current Affair host Leila Mckinnon was the least news worthy story of the year.

As well as the categories that highlight the “worst of the worst” The Fuglies also ask viewers to nominate shows and people they feel are not getting the pat on the back they deserve. Myf Warhurst has again won Most Spankable Female TV Personality after a close race with Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Hamish Blake was this year named the Spunkiest Male TV Personality. Voters gave comedian Shaun Micallef and his Newstopia show on SBS the awards for Most Under Acknowledged TV Personality and Show.

Winners of this year’s TV Fugly Awards will be formally announced in a three-minute “ceremony”. The event will include all the ingredients of an awful awards show: lame host, milk crates for a stage, temporary seating for all the nominees, water instead of champagne, shameless plugs and product placements as well as The Fuglies tradition of having a brown carpet instead of a red one and recipients receiving just a paper certificate to commemorate the notoriety.

About the TV Fugly Awards:
The TV Fugly Awards are an independent Internet based survey ofAustralian viewers with categories that TV Week Magazine keeps forgetting to add to the Logie Awards voting form. The Fuglies were started as a joke in 2002 because he did not like the Logies voting process and thought Australia needed annual television awards without glitz, glamour or even a proper ceremony to make fun of the bad programming.

  1. Toohey’s Extra Dry Pod People Harvest
    Mentos’ Chewing Gum Nipples
    AAMI’s Annoying Twins

i mustn’t be watching enough TV.. i’ve never even seen these ads!

Surprised Gladiators was judged the worst, I’d have thought the other entries on that list would have been judged far worse!

  2. Some very worthy winners there. Gladiators is awful and makes Monster House look classy by comparison. Anna Coren & Kyle are repugnant. And Myf.. well have to agree there as well!

One I disagree with is the pod people ad. IMO it’s a highly original ad and very entertaining.
