ABC viewers fooled by fake ads

There were no visible Chaser stunts at this year’s Logies, but the ABC still managed to squeeze in several plugs for its shows via phony beer plugging Wil Anderson’s new panel show, The Gruen Transfer.

The show that puts the advertising industry in the firing line has already attracted more than 200 complaints to the ABC switchboard over on-air advertisements for fake products, including Gruen Bank and Gruen Anti-Aging Cream.

A commercial for Gruen Beer will air tonight after Spicks and Specks.

Denton is producing the show via his company Zapruder’s Other Film. The title refers to Austrian shopping mall architect Victor Gruen and surreptitious marketing strategies.

“There have been a couple of hundred complaints, but I’m sure they were satisfied when they found out what they’re was for.”

The fake beer at the Logies almost upset Fosters, the official beer sponsor.

“We thought the entire Logies telecast was meant to be a product placement,” Denton quipped yesterday.

“Who knew that our little ad for Gruen beer would be going too far?”

The ads were cleared by ABC managing director Mark Scott before they aired.

The Gruen Transfer premieres 9pm Wednesday May 28.

  1. do these viewers actually LISTEN to the ads before getting on their high horse to complain? I saw the bank one the other night and it was obvious from the start that it was a send-up.

Was a clever stunt to do the fake beer bottles at the Logies. Nice to see its not just fashion designers and labels getting themselves free plugs on the Logies. (Although how long before organisers force said designers to pay for the advertising they get on the red carpet??)

  2. Lots of people were tricked 🙂

One of my blog readers even emailed me to ask if I could directly complain to someone important about commercial advertising that they’d seen on ABC TV

When I told him he’d been tricked by a promo he took it good naturedly
