Another news presenter farewells SBS

SBS has lost another news presenter with Amrita Cheema leaving to pursue an overseas appointment. She has been a presenter on the late edition of World News Australia.

Her departure follows the upheaval of 2007 with the loss of Mary Kostakidis and Stan Grant*.

World News Australia is a first rate, world class bulletin,” said Cheema. “The organisation has an excellent and dedicated team of producers, reporters and technical staff. I enjoyed working with them and wish SBS continued success in the future.”

Cheema joined SBS in December 2005 after working as a news anchors at DW-TV in Berlin.

She will leave SBS in mid June.

*Correction: Stan Grant not Anton Enus left in 07. Apologies. (Been one of those days!)

Press Release:

SBS news presenter Amrita Cheema is to leave the network after presenting World News Australia for the past two and a half years.

SBS’s Director of News and Current Affairs Paul Cutler said Amrita was leaving to take up a new appointment overseas.

Amrita joined SBS in December 2005 after working for Deutsche Welle where she was one of the principal news anchors of the English language Journal at DW-TV based in Berlin.

“Her international experience has been of great value to the World News Australia operation and her input on and off camera will be missed,” Mr Cutler said.

Amrita said she was fortunate to be at SBS at such an exciting time.

“World News Australia is a first rate, world class bulletin. The organisation has an excellent and dedicated team of producers, reporters and technical staff. I enjoyed working with them and wish SBS continued success in the future.”

Amrita will leave SBS in mid June.

  1. Such a shame that lovely Mary Kostakidis felt to resign after brush with horrible Stan Grant, who thankfully also left.
Make an effort and bring Mary back, if you can.

  2. Actually, I just saw Anton on tonight’s SBS News.

Hopefully these departures will be a wake-up call for SBS to change its news bulletin back to its original 18:30 format.
