EPISODE 14 – Wednesday 14 MAY

THEN SHE FOUND ME – is a hilarious and moving story about a woman in the midst of a unique mid-life crisis. Her world is turned upside down when, in quick succession, her husband (Matthew Broderick) leaves, her adoptive mother dies and her real one, an eccentric talk show host (Bette Midler) materializes. If this isn’t enough trouble, she finds herself falling in love with the shy English guy at her work (Colin Firth) and to make matters worse- she’s pregnant. She is a thoroughly modern woman in a thoroughly modern crisis and the only person who understands her is a mother that she has just met and who is quite frankly- really annoying.

SHARKWATER – For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world’s shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island , Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador . In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala , resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives. Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth’s history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed. Stewart’s remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world’s sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind

21 – Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) is a shy, brilliant M.I.T. student who – needing to pay school tuition – finds the answers in the cards. He is recruited to join a group of the school’s most gifted students that heads to Vegas every weekend armed with fake identities and the know-how to turn the odds at blackjack in their favour. With unorthodox math professor and stats genius Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) leading the way, they’ve cracked the code. By counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals, the team can beat the casinos big time. Seduced by the money, the Vegas lifestyle, and by his smart and sexy team-mate, Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth), Ben begins to push the limits. Though counting cards isn’t illegal, the stakes are high, and the challenge becomes not only keeping the numbers straight, but staying one step ahead of the casinos’ menacing enforcer: Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne). Directed by Aussie Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde, Win A Date With Ted Hamilton, Monster-In-Law). Based upon the book “Bringing Down The House” by Ben Mezrich.

UN SECRET – Adapted by Claude Miller and based on a true story, this is the splendid and moving saga of a Jewish family in post-war Paris, told through the eyes of a frail & intelligent young boy who senses something is amiss with his beautiful parents (Cécile De France & Patrick Bruel). On his fifteenth birthday a family friend tells him a shattering truth that may enable him to develop his own sense of self. This wholly absorbing tale is a superbly drawn study of human behaviour, featuring excellent supporting performances by Julie Depardieu, Ludivine Sagnier, Mathieu Amalric and Yves Jacques.

RATS AND CATS – tells the story of actor Darren McWarren (Jason Gann), who after a quick rise to stardom in soap operas, mini-series’ and films, then destroyed his career with a series of indiscretions. After turning his back on the industry and moving to a small coastal town, he can now behave as he wants and without fear of retribution. The local girls are willing and McWarren is soon living the life of a modern day Errol Flynn. But when city journalist Ben Baxter (Adam Zwar) decides to write a “Where Are They Now” profile on McWarren – everything changes. Ben’s probing questions unearth a tenderness in McWarren that no-one had ever seen – a desire for love, family and to be led down a more righteous path.

SHUTTER – A newly married couple discovers disturbing, ghostly images in photographs they develop after a tragic accident. Fearing the manifestations may be connected, they investigate and learn that some mysteries are better left unsolved.

THE ORPHANAGE – Laura (Belen Rueda) spent the happiest years of her childhood growing up in an orphanage by the seaside, cared for by the staff and fellow orphans whom she loved as brothers and sisters. Now, thirty years later, she returns with her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and Simon (Roger Princep), their 7-year-old son, with a dream of restoring and reopening the long abandoned orphanage as a home for disabled children. The new home and mysterious surroundings awaken Simon’s imagination and the boy starts to spin a web of fantastic tales and not-so-innocent games. As the opening day draws near, tension builds within the family. Carlos remains sceptical, believing that Simon is making everything up in a desperate bid for attention. But Laura slowly becomes convinced that something long-hidden and terrible is lurking in the old house, something waiting to emerge and inflict appalling damage on her family.

  1. Thanks David.

    I know fanera101 is joking.

Apparently Mick Jagger said in an interview that this is the only Scorsese film *not* to use Gimme Shelter.
