Airdate: 2008 Helpmann Awards

Foxtel will again broadcast the Helpmann Awards, Australia’s gongs for theatre and live performance on Monday July 28. They will air live at 8:30pm on the Bio Channel.

Hosted by actor Jonathan Biggins, they will feature the casts of The Phantom of the Opera, Billy Elliot The Musical, The Rocky Horror Show, Guys and Dolls, and My Fair Lady. There will also be appearances by The Australian Ballet, The Umbilical Brothers, Ray Crowe, the NG Twins, Vanessa Amorosi and Ana Marina.

Foxtel has a good track record of supporting the Helpmanns. Great to see it will be live to air, not long after bringing us the live Tony Awards.

The only place to see the 2008 Helpmann Awards is live and exclusive on FOXTEL’S Bio channel on Monday July 28, at 8.30pm EST.

The 2008 Helpmann Awards will be broadcast direct from the Lyric Theatre Star City, Sydney, in a two hour gala spectacular hosted by Australian actor Jonathan Biggins.

This year marks the 8th annual Helpmann Awards and it will be the most glamorous night of the theatre season with dozens of stage and screen stars on hand to present the prestigious awards.

The ceremony will also include special appearances and performances by the casts of The Phantom of the Opera, Billy Elliot The Musical, The Rocky Horror Show, Guys and Dolls, and My Fair Lady.

Also taking the stage on the night are The Australian Ballet, The Umbilical Brothers, Ray Crowe, the NG Twins, Vanessa Amorosi and Ana Marina.

Similar to the Tony Awards on Broadway and the Olivier Awards in London, The Helpmann Awards annually recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia’s vibrant live performance sectors, including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, opera, classical music, dance and physical theatre.

The Helpmann Awards, established in 2001 by Live Performance Australia (LPA) are named in honour of Sir Robert Helpmann to commemorate his memory and achievements.

There are a total of 41 categories at this year’s Helpmann Awards. The Helpmann Awards also incorporate the JC Williamson Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Australian live performance industry.

Jon Nicholls is Executive Producer of The 2008 Helpmann Awards and Stuart Maunder will direct the Award Ceremony with Max Lambert as Musical Supervisor.
