Drama breaks law behind bars

Up to ten episodes of Underbelly are reported to have been screened last weekend to youth prisoners in the Melbourne Juvenile Justice Centre.

About 15 teenage detainees are said to have watched the DVD series, supposedly smuggled in by a staff member of the Department of Human Services. A relative of one of the convicted killers depicted in Underbelly is believed to have been amongst them.

A ban on the screening, publication and distribution of the series still stands in the state of Victoria.

Director of Public Prosecutions Jeremy Rapke warned last month of the potential consequences if Justice King’s edict was breached.

“I will not hesitate to take contempt of court proceedings against any person or organisation that deliberately publishes Underbelly or any part of it,” Mr Rapke said.

A state government inquiry has been launched.
