Lilley "undecided" on sequel

Chris Lilley hasn’t decided on his next television project yet.

In talking to the UK press for the launch of Summer Heights High, he says, “I never thought about (a second series) in the beginning because it was always a one-off thing. I’m not into just cashing in and rolling off into a second series that is not as good. I really enjoyed making the show, so the thought of writing and going back there again is really fun and exciting, but I haven’t made a decision on what to do next.”

The Brits were told that Perez Hilton, Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman are fans of the show, but only 194,000 viewers, or 1.4% of the total viewing audience, tuned in for the first episode.

Despite the late night time 10.30pm slot it was described as a “middling” audience. There are also now more reviews of the show:

“The attention to detail in this show makes it a real joy to watch, even if you don’t laugh out loud constantly. It’s packed with quotes that could easily become classics, and, most important of all, it has a talented comedian at the helm who clearly has a real vision for what he wants his show to be.” -TV Scoop

“It’s a well-realised fly-on-the-wall mockumentary, set in a state secondary school in Adelaide (Adelaide?), that seeks to chuck Molotov cocktails at the barriers of bad taste, thereby flaming the outer limits of political correctness….Summer Heights High is a richly-detailed and determinedly offensive creation from Lilley. At the same time, it’s a bit too studied, and not as shocking as it wants to be. Nor as funny as it thinks it is. – The Herald

“The programme has the witty absurdity of Arrested Development, the garish characters of Kath & Kim and the cringe-making behaviour of The Office. It’s a real Marmite offering – you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it. I happened to love it.” – The Mirror.

  1. No WAY is this show in even the same league as Arrested Development!
I’m surprised those quotes didn’t contain phrases like “holds a mirror to multi-cultural society”
“We all went to school with someone like that”
In the last three months I’m half and half on the show, it’s not very funny and Chris is clearly a self indulgent actor/writer but I very much respect it’s fans and the impact it has had on people.
But Arrested Development witty! no friggin way!!
Any negative reviews to maybe even it out a little? Give a full view?
