More than a game for Sam ‘act’

The more Sam Newman is analysed and debated by media, the more his mask cracks -if only through the repeated claims that the on air persona contradicts that of the man himself. They are claims that have been noted on TV Tonight before.

Now Newman’s mate Eddie McGuire has called on him to ditch his TV persona.

“Sam needs to have a break and come back as John Newman, the man I know and love,” McGuire writes in the Herald Sun today.

“I am over Sam and I reckon John Newman is, too. If, in the period off air, Newman can find John and lose Sam, then the best of this man is yet to come.”

Long-time friend Kevin King said Newman was a “showman” whose stage was TV, rather than a misogynist venting his hatred.

“There’s a lot of theatre in what he does,” he said.

“He doesn’t take himself seriously and he is bemused by those who do.”

Newman’s son added, “Dad doesn’t care what people think of him, he only cares what his family and friends think.

“He doesn’t need counselling, but he may need a break.”

Loris Charlton, a member of Women At The Alfred (hospital) which raises money for prostate cancer, said Newman had supported their charity work before he knew he had the disease.

“He is very generous and a great fellow. You ask him for a favour and he just says, ‘Righto’,” she said.

But does Newman “dropping the act” actually burst the bubble? Isn’t ‘believability’ a key factor in what makes the very act succeed (as surely, it does)? And it arguably only makes the “dummygate” incident all the more repugnant.

If we all know Newman is faking it, or at best exaggerating it, would we continue to buy into the charade?

  1. id rather sam was a jerk off screen then on, because that is what we see. I don’t care that he is mother teresa when not on TV. The excuse to carry on like a douche on TV to make it interesting is getting pretty old. It just confirms the footy show is full of hot air and very boring without making it into a circus that features animal cruelty.

  2. I’ve spoken to three people who have worked with him at GTV9 over the years, and they have ALL said that the Sam Newman you see on TV is all an act. He is truly a gentleman who is unbelievably generous with his time (and money).

I can’t stand his persona on The Footy Show, but I respect him for the hard work he does behind the scenes. Especially as he doesn’t parade his good deeds in front of the media like a lot of others in the public eye.

  3. I always thought it was obvious it was an (amusing) act. I think people who put on an act like that are usually quite vulnerable behind it.

I personally him a quite talented *gasp* comedian.

  4. 1. Anytime Eddie talks you know its a spin.

    2. I and many see that great guy on TV every week. It seems to be the people who DONT watch the show that have a false perception of the guy.

    3. Our country is involved in a war atm and the media and upper class society are going nuts over a guy on a football show, if we had the same public backlash to wars, disease and famine we’d be gettin somewhere.
