Will the Brits get Ja’mie?

Summer Heights High starts in the UK on Tuesday on BBC3. The channel is described as a home for “new drama, new talent” and has previously screened Torchwood, Little Britain, Funland and The Mighty Boosh.

But before it even gets out of the starting blocks, one critic has already attacked Chris Lilley’s comedy saying, “why bother?” As you’ll see from his review, Brian Donaldson just didn’t get the gag. Period.

“Of course, you’ll feel that you’ve seen all this fly-on-the-graffiti-wall stuff a hundred thousand times before, but where it really falls down is in its central twist,” he writes.

“Where the best mockumentaries work by at least making you believe in the pitiful lives of its subjects, Summer Heights High chooses to bypass all that by having one man at its core. Chris Lilley has not only created and written the show, but has opted to take on the three main roles of dull bruiser kid Jonah, self-obsessed teen girl Ja’mie and pretentious drama teacher Mr G. It’s ludicrous, pointless and, worst, not in the slightest bit amusing.”

That said, he didn’t like Kath & Kim or Back to You either (and they reckon I’m hard?).

  1. Well one or two Hollywood types have come out endorsing the show.
Trey Parker who of curse is the creator/writer/actor behind South Park has announced on his soutparkstudios website that it is currently his favorite show and has linked to live streaming episodes of it, John Cusack has also stated that he is a big fan of the show and he also stated he is a big fan Australian Music. You never know! Critics don’t count, it’s the real people sitting on their couches at home wanting to be entertained and dont have anything to prove that makes an audience.

  2. summer heights high, what crap.
IT Crowd, Mighty Boosh, Black Books, etc are comedy. Lilley wouldn’t know comedy if it hit him in the face, because he simply isn’t funny. He’s distinctly yawn-ish and unfunny.
