Simpsons sequel "someday"

Matt Groening has confirmed that a sequel to The Simpsons Movie is on the horizon.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, Groening noted that a second feature could take several years to emerge as the show’s production team aren’t keen to put in the extra hours.

“It will happen at some point, but I have no idea when,” he said. “The first one took us four years – mainly because we don’t like to work any harder than we usually do.”

He added: “We’ll get to it, I’m sure.”

The Simpsons Movie grossed more than $500 million at the worldwide box office.

  1. What annoyed me most about The Simpsons Movie is that NONE of the jokes made you think. They were all spelled out for the audience leaving very little to the imagination.

The magic behind earlier episodes in the series is that the humour can often be ambiguous and interpretive. Even a moment that doesn’t really try to be humourous can draw the biggest laughs. I didn’t see any of that in The Simpsons Movie.

That’s not to say that it was necessarily bad, but really, did they really need to stoop to the lowest common demoninator in order to appeal to a mainstream audience? :/

With that said, I’m very much looking forward to a sequel although I wouldn’t expect it to happen for another 4-5 years at least.

  2. That's the answer to a question nobody asked! The movie was alright – it probably grossed >$500m only because it's The Simpsons – but do we really want a sequel?
