Two hypothetical Gruen Transfer ads on “invading New Zealand” have caused something of a ruckus across the Tasman.

The “call to arms” was watched by 1.3 million people, making it the most-watched episode in this current series.

The clips have been viewed over 50,000 times on the shows website (up 30%), as well as another 12,000 on YouTube. TVNZ’s The Close Up screened the clips and the New Zealand Herald featured articles.

The Herald even asks readers how they would promote an invasion of Oz. Here are some of their responses:

Hey Oustralians, we are coming over to take back what is rightfully ours:-
– Phar Lap
– Crowded House
– Sir Edmund Hillary
– Pavlova
– Russell Crowe (actually, no, you can keep him.)
Stop claiming to be the owners. you ain’t. get over it.

Australia. A country of well balanced people as they have a chip on both shoulders. In reality they are envious of their Kiwi neighbours but don’t want to admit it.

How about “Australia. When you grow out of NZ”

And to the people who think Australians say seedney and feeesh n cheeps, you’re wrong. It’s actually that the Australians know how to pronounce words correctly.
You’d know all about that though ay bro?!

A 15-30 seconds advertisement should display a small, varied green moving strip, representing the green, lush and interesting New Zealand. On the other side covering 80% of the screen a light, sandy still strip with 2-4 US flag- stars, representing desert, big, snooty, booring Australia.

“Our Country Sucks, Can we Come Live With You Guys?”

Over 6,000 people have voted for their favourite ad so far, with 303’s 100% for the Taking, attracting 70% of the votes. Intriguingly, Gruen’s panel of advertising professionals saw it the other way, handing the coveted Gruen trophy to Marmalade’s ad proposing an new Australian national holiday to celebrate our all-to-easy conquest of New Zealand.

In the final episode to air on Wednesday, July 30 the tables are turned, with two competing ad agencies acting on behalf of the New Zealand government to discourage international tourists from holidaying in Australia.

  1. I am so glad the 100% for the taking ad polled so highly. The other one was mildly funny – but it’s just the same sort of thing you see on the average Aussie beer ad. I was shocked the whole panel went for it. The 100% ad, on the other hand, was genuinely hilarious.

Maybe that’s because I’d prefer to make fun of New Zealand than celebrate (what I see as) some of the worst Aussie stereotypes… Yeah, I’m a snob.
