In the lead up to the NRL 2008 Grand Final, The History Channel will commemorate the centenary of Rugby League with the premiere two hour special, THE SPIRIT OF AUSTRALIAN SPORT – RUGBY LEAGUE, on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:30pm AEST.

Hosted by father and son league legends, John and Scott Sattler and narrated by renowned sports commentator Mike Gibson, the exclusive FOXTEL production celebrates the greatest moments in Australian Rugby League over the past 100 years.

Featuring rare archival footage of some of the game’s greatest moments, this special pays homage to the sport from its humble beginnings, telling the stories of its great players and exciting matches and the blazing controversies that have been the game’s trademark.

The program also features interviews with more than 60 of the game’s greatest names; including heroes of the early days such as Joe `Chimpy’ Busch, George Treweek and Clive ‘the Little Master’ Churchill, as well as heroes of the last 50 years including Graeme Langlands, Reg Gasnier, Arthur Beetson, Norm Provan, Wally Lewis and Allan Langer. NRL champions of today, including Craig Wing, Darren Lockyer and recently retired league champion Andrew Johns, also speak of their own career highlights and memories.

Produced by Graham McNeice Productions (Crime Investigation Australia), this commemorative television event is a reminder of the great days and the great players of league’s passing parade and, at the same time, a signpost for the next 100 years to come.

The Spirit of Australian Sport – Rugby League is the third special in The History Channel’s exclusive sporting series. Other sports to be showcased include Horse Racing and Tennis.

The Spirit of Australian Sport – Rugby League will have its world premiere on The History Channel on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:30pm AEST.

An encore screening will air on Grand Final Eve, October 4 at 8:30pm.

  1. I would very much like to know if it is possible to get a copy of the Spirit of Australia sport: Rugby League. My brother-in-law is Harry Wells and I saw him in this program and would like to be able to watch it again.
