Robson Green is back in Australia to promote the next series of Wire in the Blood which premieres on the ABC next week.
The sixth series, produced by Robson’s own production Coastal Productions, airs at 8:30pm Friday September 5th.
As clinical psychologist Tony Hill, Green is regularly solving the dark, grisly murders of the series, but as he tells TV Tonight exclusively, it wasn’t always the case.
“There’s been an episode in the last series where the killer got on a plane and left,” he admits. “We never got him. But in the books, and you’re the only person I’ve ever said this to -this is true, hand on heart- Tony Hill never solves a crime.
“In all the books. That’s the truth. He never solves a crime, which is one thing we had to address, of course.”
For the television series, the storytelling requires not only a pro-active role by the character of Hill, but a satisfying hero’s journey.
“He leads the police down the right path. But in the end he doesn’t solve it. The killers get away or escape or other do things. Tony Hill never solves the crime. And that’s the truth.”
Robson was in Australia last year for the shooting of Mike Bullen’s Make or Break for the UK TV channel. But the one hour pilot has yet to receive a full series. It’s a project Green would love to see realised, but there are so many factors involved.
“It’s got to work out with my schedule and Mike’s schedule and who’ll broadcast it. It might be a great piece but if nobody’s going to watch it, there’s no point making it. So we’ve got to make sure there’s a market for it and if all things come together, yeah, there could be something happening.”
A regular visitor to Australia, Green was also very complimentary of the local cast of Make or Break.
“Susie Porter’s great, and I love Ben Oxenbould, I think he’s a terrific actor, really, really funny guy. I just think it needs a few more additional aspects to it.
“It needs to shoot on film, we need more time to rehearse. You have to bring other things to the mix that if it’s going to go to series, you’ll have to utilise.
“Hand on heart if I could make it living out here, I really would. But it’s tough on actors in Australia.
Green maintains a healthy interest in Aussie television, and is keen to see Channel TEN’s new drama.
“I’m looking forward to Rush, that looks pretty good,” he said.
“A lot of the shows during my career are shown in Australia. There’s a lot of reasons why I come to Australia but the main reason is the weather and the jet lag!”
