A Current Affair addresses ACMA concerns

Nine has moved to appease concerns with ACMA over breaches of the Code of Practice by A Current Affair.

Breaches of the ACMA Code of Practice have so concerned Nine boss David Gyngell that he organised a meeting with his news chiefs and ACMA chairman Chris Chapman to improve the situation and Nine’s standing with the regulator.

As a result, A Current Affair reporters and producers were required to undergo extra training to address those concerns.

The Sunday Telegraph
reports that ACMA has confirmed that complaints against both Today Tonight and A Current Affair have lead to investigations despite several warnings.

In 2006-07, for example, Today Tonight was investigated a total of nine times and found to have breached the code twice. A Current Affair was investigated six times and also found to have breached the code twice. The six investigations into each show date back to the second half of 2007.

ACA has now breached the Broadcasting Code five times since 2005, prompting a meeting earlier this year with senior Nine staff to address concerns and to review compliance issues.

Both of the two breaches found ACA to have broadcast stories that failed to adequately present viewpoints and factual material accurately.

Darren Wick, executive producer of ACA, described the meeting as constructive and helpful to both organisations.

Peter Meakin, director of news and public affairs for the Seven Network, refuted ACMA assertions and said the network’s record was almost a “clean slate” considering the two million viewers averaged each night.

  1. Rupert Murdoch’s wife, everybody is making her out to be a hero for attacking someone, she should have been told to leave the area. If it was someone else (not in the public eye) they would have been escorted out and charged for assault, which she should be. There seems to be 2 sets of rules, one for nobodys and one for personalities.

  2. re. report on beef wars between coles & woolworths 27/12/2010,while i concur with some of the comments regarding HGP’s, i cannot abide someone like peter russel clark, having the audasitity to say that “cow farmers have been making a fortune out HGP beef”. i find that comment extremly offensive and would appriciate if he would stick to cooking. one other thing i have been in the industry for more than 30 yrs and i have used HGP’s. also i have for the last 15 yrs not used them in my cattle. because we eat our own beef, i can tell you that we cannot discerne a difference. i am ropable over his uninformed comments. yours sincerly, reiner vresk

  3. It was humorous watching Kerry O’Brien last night on 7.30 Report. He had just finished a story on Climate Change and ETS that only the most stupid and gullible would believe that the sea level is going to rise 6m and all water front homes are at risk. Then O’Brien started on the next story where he criticised the stupid and gullible for getting involved in a cult. It seems that O’Brien is too stupid to see the irony.

If any politician or Climate Change believer has waterfront property I would like to make an offer to purchase it. It will be underwater and worthless soon anyhow so you should be grateful for getting anything for your waterfront property….right? Lets see how may Labor politicians believe their own spin, deception and propaganda and sell me their water front properties at a bargain price.

    Sincerely

  4. Dear Ms Grimshaw

I would love to see you address the bushfire arsonists directly into the camera telling them they will be caught and they will spend their entire lives in jail. And also telling them they will not be seeing any more TV pictures of their handiwork, which I believe is the major reason for their activities.

If all television stations would agree to a blackout of pictures of fires and pictures of survivors, their criminal activities may not be so attractive. Just last night more fires apparently were lit in the Beechworth area and to me it is very clear that the reason for this perhaps is there are not enough TV pictures to satisfy them, so they go out and light more.

    Thank you for your attention.

    1. Personally I don’t think we want any journalists or presenters becoming Jack Bauer on screen. They should report the statements of authorities.

Secondly if you want to contact Ms Grimshaw it isn’t via here, please contact Nine.

  5. I would be very interested if you could do an investigation on Why it takes 3 days for payments from one bank to reach another, this includes monies going from one account to another within the same organisation. This happens with all our staff pays, it also happens with my own personal accounts. When the money is taken from my primary account to pay my Credit Card the money disappears for approx., 72 hours. Who is benefitting from this – to me this is theft. Maybe ACA can come up with an answer for all Aussies.
    Warm Regards
    Annie

  6. Bente did Tom put you up to this?

The Narconon program was developed by L. Ron Hubbard and an inmate in an american Prison. Neither I believe had any medical or welfare qualifications. And just because you and Scientology says it has a 75% success rate means nothing, they also claim that the Holocaust was the result of Psychiatry Industry, here’s me thinking it was the Nazis. Old Ron has been found to be lying about just about every detail of his life? So I am sorry if thinking people are Sceptical

Vitimans and steam baths do not help people with addictions. Naraconon is just another scientology scam. Google operation clam bake.

“And what about the cost of destroyed lives and families every day due” to Scientology.

  7. Re A CURRENT AFFAIR PROGRAM 29 9 06
    ON THE NARCONON PROGRAM

My name is Bente Petersen, I have worked for United Nations for years and been in social work for 40 years. I am now an advisor to Narconon.

Drugs is a huge problem with an estimated 200 million drug users world wide and that figure is probably much, much too low…. The estimated social cost of drug and alcohol abuse in the US alone is 414 billion annually!!!

And what about the cost of destroyed lives and families every day due to drugs ?

I think anyone doing the hard work of getting people off drugs should be thanked and commended and helped.

Did you know that according to United Nation, drug trafficking is a $400 billion per year industry, equivalent to 8% of the World’s trade.

The Narconon program has a an average success rate of 76% – in Narconon Melbourne its 82% that means 82% of the program graduates have not reverted even 2 years after graduation !

The Narconon program has been around for more than 40 years – it is delivered to Christians, Muslims and Budhist in countries like USA, Iran, Taiwan, South Africa, Italy and Denmark and her in Australia to mention a few.

    The Narconon Program Works!

    Best regards,

    Bente Petersen

  8. I usually separate nine programming and nine news and current affairs. In a way I respect their news (a current affair, not really), but their programming is a completely different story.

  9. Benno that’s also what I wanted to point out but forgot to, Today Tonight other than during the Olympics normally rates as David mentioned between 1.2 – 1.4 Million!

Anyways, very valid point you made there David about it being significant Nine was actually taking steps to try and better and improve their relationship with the ACMA. Good on them for doing so and taking the initiative to try and do something in order to prevent reports from being reported to the ACMA. I’m glad to hear they’re taking action rather than being arrogant like Peter Meakin at Seven!

  10. Yep, the Tele didn’t even bother to refute that claim.

TT never gets those sorts of figures on a weeknight, instead sitting around 1.2 – 1.4m.

I thought what was significant here was that Nine was taking some steps to address ACMA, whereas Seven seems to have its head in the sand.

Of course how well that plays out remains to be seen.
