Cheerio for now, Kevin.

More than 500 mourners gathered to remember a television gardening pioneer.

More than 500 people have paid their respects to former ABC TV gardener, Kevin Heinze who died last week at the age of 80.

The man who always signed off with a trademark “Cheerio for now” was farewelled at Kilsyth, near his former property at Montrose, used to host broadcasts and fundraisers.

Mourners formed a guard of honour outside the local sports centre where the funeral was held.

Mr Heinz hosted Sow What for 21 years and gave ABC radio listeners gardening advice for three decades. The Kevin Heinze Garden Centre in Doncaster stands as a tribute to the pioneer, as a recreational gardening centre for people of all ages with disabilities or special needs. He is remembered as Australia’s first “celebrity” pioneer.

His wife, Jill, and daughter remembered Mr Heinze as a devoted gardener, who was generous with school students.

He died after a heart attack last week.
