Guests just wanna have fun

Cyndi Lauper was generous in supporting the Idols. By the end of the show she seemed less enthusiastic about the format.

Iconic pop star Cyndi Lauper appeared on Australian Idol as a guest judge and mentor tonight, as part of her album promo tour.

Lauper was generous at being a mentor to the young singers, giving them vocal coaching and expert tips at tackling the “80’s night” theme.

In her judging comments she continued something of a “mother hen” role, supporting the singers as they faced the public and thereafter the judges. But Lauper’s level of comfort with the show seemed to end at a different point to where it started.

As the show wore on, she had disagreed with both Kyle Sandilands and Dicko’s juding comments, growing less and less enthusiastic with the show’s mix of young singers being mauled by outspoken judges (and this week they were fairly tame).

Responding to criticism that Thanh Bui could be difficult to market as a pop star, Lauper said, “They told me Girls Just Wanna Have Fun would never be played because I sang too high, and they were ready to write a letter for me….they had a meeting to tell me what to do.”

It was lucky the show didn’t go on for much longer, or things might have gotten very heated.

On Monday Lauper will be back to sing Time after Time, the second time she has done so in the Idol franchise. In 2006 she appeared on Canadian Idol.

  1. Cyndi was fabulous … and so valuable for the contestants who improved out of site after her coaching and technical advice … first thing they need to do is fire whoever is their current vocal coach and have an industry professional as a mentor every week! The current coach is definitely NOT doing a decent job! Loved how she and Marcia had a go at the “industry experts” who are about as useless as “t*** on a bull” when it comes to deciding who to support and how to promote them.
As for ABBA night … not a hope in hell of getting any of them out here … maybe they should get the President of the ABBA Fan Club to make sure they get it right!!!
    Jack!

  2. She may not be very articulate (neither am I) but Cyndi Lauper was fantastic! She knows her stuff! She would out-qualify Marcia in a second! I think between her, Dicko – with his industry knowledge and Kyle – with his improved attitude and Radio wisdom …it was a fantastic, well rounded show! The boys (especially James) were brilliant! Ricki-Lee is still finding her feet, but doing very well.
Now as to the elimination show…think I’ll just tune in at the end!

  3. Well I must have been watching a different show because her judging comments made me cringe with embarrassment. She was well-meaning but so inarticulate, She asked everyone how they felt and then stumbled to make a comment. AAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  4. Cyndi Lauper’s mentoring made a real difference to most of the performers. Would be good if she came back to Australian Idol each year as a mentor / guest judge (couldn’t image she would want to do it permanently – she has a 10 year old son and is still touring / writing / recording).
Her new dance cd “Bring Ya To The Brink” and single “Into The Nightlife” are fantastic. Check them out.

  5. Cyndi was indeed a great choice for the first mentor/guest judge. Very generous and warm and prepared to tell the other idiots they were wrong.

I hope they continue with some really strong mentors, and not some starlets that the record company need to boost sales.

  6. Agree with everyone Cyndi was awesome! She really took the singers to another level. Loved it when she told Kyle she was gonna kill him cause she thought he was going to say something nasty 🙂 Also loved her remark to Dicko about being a typical record label guy..so true and it peeves me off as well!

  7. Totally agree with Leo – that’s exactly what I was thinking during Idol – get rid of Marcia and fly Cyndi back every week. Cyndi is an absolute gem and it looks like fame hasn’t changed her one bit. Love her!

  8. Cyndi Lauper was fantastic tonight – it’s easy to see why she has sold over 50 million records worldwide – she was a wonderful mentor to the singers tonight – offering advice & wisdom of her years & years experience as a performer.
She had me cracking up at times with her down to earth & no bull shit ways – she’s a real loose cannon at times & it was a very enjoyable episode tonight.
I wonder if we could trade Marcia for Cyndi – she really gives it in spades!!

  9. Loved the show tonight! I think the decision to have mentors, who also guest judge, is a great idea – finally taking something from American Idol that, IMO, works. I think it was great seeing Cyndi holding her own up against Kyle and Dicko. The top 11 did overall a really good job tonight – besides Tom – who has to go – he was tragic. Question is – will a member of ABBA be here to mentor the contestants for ABBA night? It wouldn’t make sense having such a night if they didn’t.
