Idle press on a Sunday

Another Sunday. Another round of Idol stories in the papers. At this rate a publicist will be on hand in case Marcia should break a nail.

Gee whiz…take your pick of stories about Australian Idol today in the Sunday papers -all strategically timed to remind you that the show is on tonight.

TONIGHT.

None of them warrant much attention, even on this site but if you wanna go read them, there’s:

News Limited: Kyle Sandilands reckons he has to lose weight or risk dying young. The most intriguing comment here was in relation to a promise to work out with contestant Chrislyn: Sandilands said he had no intention of hitting the gym any time soon. “Absolutely not, that was just for live TV,” he said.
“I will not be getting on the treadmill with Chrislyn.”

Fairfax Papers: Wes Carr rejects claims his extensive music industry experience gives him an unfair advantage over his rivals on the show.

Yet another Fairfax article talks up Sandilands’ wedding this Friday.

And even the Gold Coast News is in on the act, with former pop star Normie Rowe criticising the show, and calling on a return to true variety. During the ’70s Rowe said there were about 60 live spots each week on programs like The Don Lane Show, The Midday Show and Countdown which launched dozens of stellar entertainers.

  1. Leo, Cyndi is in Australia to do promo for her new album, so since she’s already here it makes sense for her label (Sony BMG) to get her onto Idol for some exposure that’ll surely include a look at her latest video clip. Remember, Idol and Sony BMG are connected at the hip.

Cyndi then pops over to Tokyo for a show on Tuesday. Basically, she’s in the neighbourhood and there’s a promo opportunity to be had. This is no coup.

  2. I can’t wait for Idol tonight!
How on earth did 10 get a big star like Cyndi Lauper to come downunder to do it, its fantastic.
Im sure they will learn alot from her, she has had so much success & sold millions of albums all around the world, her new album is fantastic too!

  3. Accurate viewing figures? OzTAM is the industry standard, they’d dispute they’re not accurate I’m sure. In any case it’s a system that puts them all on the same playing field.

SMS voting on all shows is commercial in confidence, though Wikipedia seems to think it has an insight if you check the Idol listing. I’m not convinced by the sourcing though (2003 article).

  4. Sounds more like desperation corner.

Have to wonder wheher he publicare generally interested in this type of show anymore.

David, any chance of accurate viewing figures and as sidenote, any idea how much networks rake up with “phone calls” voting for so and so.

Odds are without the boost from voting revenue, idol would join BB in the recycle bin.
