Mark who?

Dicko reckons he isn't missing Holden. Such a lovely way to get publicity.

“Do you think there is a void left by Mark? I don’t think so,” Dicko has said today in an interview.

That would be Mark Holden, as if there was any doubt…

“It’s all about the talent this year and we’re keen to move away from the image of bickering middle-aged people and show people what they want to see – young people on a journey.”

Dicko also commented on other changes to the Australian Idol format this year, including the extra voting that proceeds during the Monday verdict show.

“We took a look at So You Think You Can Dance and liked what they did with their elimination shows,” he told the Brisbane Times.

Idol’s Monday night was always a bit of a naff for the audience because it was really just 15 minutes of content rolled out over an hour, but we’ve recognised that and strengthened it.

“We’re making the bottom three contestants ‘sing for their lives’, so they will have to do a new song and get judged while the voting lines are still open.”

Well, at least on the East Coast, Dicko.

So far the Final 12 is shaping up to be very male-heavy. There are 5 males and 1 female so far. Expect to see lots of girls in Sunday’s “Wildcard” edition.

  1. Ive watched Idol from the very beginning and i personally think that the show is missing something !! As much as Mark was irritating at times he was good television. He took the seriousness out of the show and made it fun.Dicko is just putting the boot in now.Mark has expressed numerous times publicly how he would stick with Idol and never leave. So i hope for Mark that the whole panel gets the chop next season and Dicko dissapears back into obscurity!! We are all going to miss the Touchdowns and the Goony Ga Ga comments. As much as everyone bagged it,they made the live shows what they WERE.

  2. Totally agree with neonkitten – what state the contestants come from should make no difference. I would rather see the most talented person win the competition.

As for the word “journey” – The Biggest Loser wins hands down for how many times this word is used in one season!! Apparently you can’t lose weight withour being on a journey. lol

  3. Sheesh, has Idol got a trade mark on the word “journey” these days? Enough already!

Agreed Danny, Kyle should have been the one to go, but he’s probably under contract and they’re stuck with him (hence last year’s four judges). Dicko and Holden’s increasing dislike of each other last year was plainly obvious however, and so one of them probably had to go.

As for voting times favouring NSW/VIC contestants… well, if people would vote for what they’re MEANT to be voting for, that won’t be an issue. If it does turn out to be a problem and votes only come in for contestants in those states, that pretty much makes the entire audience voting process void. You’re meant to be voting on the performances, not barracking for a state team.

  4. I really think Kyle should have been the one to go. He has no real music industry experience, his previous experience is bitching a crapping on in between programming department set songs on 2dayfm in Sydney. He speaks with no substantial knowledge or authority. Dicko’s back to be the meaner one on the panel, Kyle was the fat that needed to be cut, not Holden.

  5. Yes sTeVie g, but their are more advertising minutes to sell off in a one hour show – and by keeping the voting open later they will bring in more vote $$ as well.

The difference is with SYTYCD that the public decides who is in the bottom 3, knowing that the judges then decide who goes home – the judges are the “experts” and they take into account the contestants performance throughout the series – whether they are improving, their ability to learn knew styles and work with a partner etc. So they are not using the “dance for your life” elimination show to bring in more votes – only advertising $$ by making show longer.

Basically, I don’t think it will be much better. Look at what happened on the last night of BB this year where for the first time they told you who was winning “so if you want to change result vote now!!” – once they realised people were then going to start voting – they showed how the results had changed since they last showed you and then the public got another chance to vote. It must have been successful financially so now they are trying to keep the Idol voting going as long as possible.

If our judges were more credible and consistent we could have the judges decide who goes with the public only having the voting power to keep their favourite out of the bottom 3.

Then the Aussie Supermodel show is doing the exact opposite – the judges decide who is in the bottome 3, then the public can vote to save. There are only 3 phone numbers to give out. Fans of the othe contestants won’t feel compelled to vote at all.

It’s all over the shop really!

  6. I don’t think there is void with out Mark at all. I agree with Dicko on that point. At four, there were too many judges. It’s good to have one less ego there. That being said all remaining judges have tremendous egos as well. and Dicko, you are still bickering…
I’m not sure about this extra process of the bottom three having to sing again. That seems just another way to drag things out. I would have prefered the results show be cut to half an hour.

  7. It’s very obvious Dicko loves Mark being gone. I am too. I found him to be extremely irritating. But I don’t exactly like Dicko either. I did find this to be a bit hypocritical though:

“It’s all about the talent this year and we’re keen to move away from the image of bickering middle-aged people and show people what they want to see – young people on a journey.”

When Kyle was out sick during the auditions, Dicko and Marcia acted like little kids.

  8. “Well, at least on the East Coast, Dicko.”

Come October, even Queensland viewers won’t be able to vote, as they don’t observe daylight savings times (and thus see the show delayed by one hour). It’s definitely going to favour NSW/VIC singers this year.

  9. I miss Mark Holden on the judging panel. Despite his over-the-top Touchdowns and the fact that he could be a bit of a pill at times (as the remaining judges can be also) – I thought he added valuable technical advice to contestants, as well as sharing his experiences in the recording studio and giving the Idols some hands-on time in there. I liked his passion, his support, and his ability to laugh at himself and put the Idols at ease.

I’ve missed him more as the show has progressed, especially since Marcia has been delegated to take over the musical technicality side of things in his absence. Mind you, it’s nice to have some respite from the usual “You go, Girlfriend” only comments. I think that although Dicko provides valuable input as a judge, he has an ego larger than himself. He played a huge part in the so-called bickering, and was often the instigator and had quite a nasty streak.

I disagree with Dicko. I think there is a void. For me, it isn’t quite Idol, without Mark Holden.
