Molly Shannon on Kath Day

Here's a quick grab from Molly Shannon about Kath & Kim in a US magazine interview.

Here’s another slice of Molly Shannon’s take on Kath & Kim from an interview with US gay magazine, The Advocate.

Q: Do you think the U.S. version of Kath & Kim will appeal to a large gay audience?
A: Oh, yeah. For starters, it’s a female-driven comedy, and our characters are really into celebrity and the world of pop culture. There may be a future episode where they have a party and all dress up like celebrities that they don’t look like at all — like, “I’m Nicole Kidman!” It’s ridiculous.

Q: Kath’s boyfriend is suspiciously effeminate in the original series. Has that carried over?
A: Yes, that has carried over, and there will probably be an episode where someone tells her they suspect that he’s gay, and she becomes panicked — ”Oh, my God, is he gay? He’s gay! Gay! Gay! Gay!”

It’s a shame there was no mention of the excision of the character of Sharon with some talk of a gay best friend for Kim, to be played by Tony Yalda. Maybe that’s because the role is now so diluted as to not warrant a mention?

I reckon Shannon will ultimately prove a good choice for Kath, but I’m a bit surprised a journo called Kel “suspiciously effeminate.” Kel is totally straight, he’s just a modern, manscaping man with more ambition than sense.

The show launches early October with a pre-release online from NBC.

  1. I guess we have to take the fact that they’re putting so many clips online, and pre-releasing an episode online as that the producers and NBC at least believe that they have a hit and not a dud.

I guess it all comes down to how Americans perceive it. I just can’t imagine Americans falling in love with it in the first few weeks before NBC start to think about canning it. I guess that’s the real reason why they’re trying to get people to fall in love with it now with all the clips etc.

  2. I think everyone’s predictions of doom will prove unfounded, and it will be a surprise hit. Context matters, and the clips seen so far are hard to judge anything by. I think it could appeal to the same audience who like “My Name Is Earl”.

  3. I’m betting the girls made sure they protected their interests that it wouldn’t air in Oz without their happiness. Aside from popping up online, footage would also be very sought by TT, ACA, Sunrise, Today etc.
