Not quite topless, but Sara stands defiant

Earlier reports that suggested Sara Longman was asked to go topless in public were a little off target. But it's a moot point.

The controversial semi-naked shoot in Make Me a Supermodel showed Sara Longman unhappy with an ensemble photo shoot in Melbourne’s Federation Square.

An earlier report that suggested she was asked to appear topless was technically misleading -but it’s a moot point. At just 17 years of age it was a tall order, reality television or not.

“You should never be in a situation where you feel compelled or forced to do anything,” judge Martin Walsh told her. “But it is part of the business … where you have to do those sorts of things.”

“Right now I don’t feel comfortable,” said Sara. “And there’s nothing I can change about that to feel comfortable.”

While none of the girls were topless, they were certainly scantily-clad with thin strips of fabric, painted over with body paint. Hundreds of people looked on just inches away, creating what was certainly an exposing, in more ways than one, situation.

Sara explained her reluctance saying, “If it was a photo shoot, maybe, if I was a little bit more covered up. But going down there into the middle of one of Australia’s largest cities not knowing who’s there, who’s looking…. it’s just not something that lies well in me.”

Judge Martin Walsh turned on the drama. “She is letting down the team, to some degree,” he said.

The challenge followed a naked art class earlier in the week for the contestants, all of whom were allowed to wear flesh coloured underwear. The under 18 models were told they would wear the underwear.

At the end of the episode the judges again told Sara, “Modelling is tough. You will be asked to do things you’re not entirely comfortable with. Maybe this isn’t the right industry for you.”

When asked if she regretted her decision, a defiant Sara said, “..honestly I don’t regret it.”

As it turns out Sara was not put into the bottom three by the judges, complimented on her work in another photo shoot.

The Seven show has so far languished in the ratings. No doubt there will be a spike on Friday morning.

  1. I applaud here deeply. I mean for a start she is underage, secondly after watching the episode i was shocked that nearly all the models wore the ‘nude’ underwear. It was made out that it was only sara but no it was practically most of them.

I have to say though that the age limit should be lifted to 18 if another series is given the green light. I must say though where was Tyson last night. Has he left the series already or does he have other commitments

  2. Thank GOD she is still in the chance of becoming a super model!….

I still believe that age limit should change for this type of reality show, therefore the next season, they should limit the age to 18 and above.

  3. I agree, David. Moot point or not, I thought Sara’s stand was applaudable. She’s such a beautiful, well-grounded young lady. I was glad to see that she wasn’t in the bottom three last night, and wish her all the very best.

  4. One has to wonder if producers & those associated with Model (Hawkins especially)did not know controversy was around corner with people under legal age.

You have folks burning clothes (reimbursed or not) posing naked for art classes and then very scantilly clad in open – Is that really what a model is there for.

    Promoting what product ?

And if you were advertiser would you really want to be associated with model who has poor morals.

P.S. Thought aim of show was “helping them become models not porn stars
