Prison Break ready for axe

Producer Matt Olmstead knows the end may be coming, and has plans for a fitting end.

Prison Break‘s executive producer Matt Olmstead has admitted that the show may be axed in the near future.

In the wake of average ratings for recent US episodes, Olmstead told Entertainment Weekly: “There’s a shelf life to serialised drama. If this is the last season, we’re not mourning that because it’s been a great ride and we have a great season [ahead].”

Should the series be cancelled midseason, Olmstead says the writers will “definitely have enough time to prepare for an appropriate ending. The season finale we have in mind could play as a season or series finale.”

That said, he admitted that Prison Break‘s producers have “absolutely been encouraged by the response” to the fourth season. “It took a while to get the right idea… and to have the audience supporting it is very gratifying.”

Seven will screen the fourth series in October, but tipped to be given a 10:30pm timeslot.

  1. No! Don’t axe prisonbreak! I’m sure no prisonbreak fan wants an awesome show like this to be gone forever!!! Please continue writing the amazing plot that you do for prisonbreak, writers!!! Please make a 5th season!!!! Or more!!! Prisonbreak is one of the best shows of this century, Please don’t get rid of it!!!

Why channel 7!!! How could you get rid of one of the best shows on your channel?!?! Then you also put Heroes on at a ridiculous time!

Its not like these shows are R-rated or anything! There’s nothing over the top!

  2. I totally love Prison Break….
It is the one show i have watched right from the beggining and i would hate for them to axe it with out giving it a proper ending….. At the end of each episode i am all ways so exciting wondering whats going to happen next week, they can’t just kill it off!!! I hate that it is not on till 10.30…. I usually go to bed at 8.30 and set my alarm to wake up at 10.30 an watch it…. If it was on earlier i recon it would have a lot more viewers….

    Can’t wait till thursday night…..

  3. I hope they at least finish the season, it’d be such a shame if it didn’t get a proper ending. I like that with the current season, they changed things up a lot so it’s more a spin off, but it’s good. It does keep getting better and more interesting. I kind of like the way it’s been an evolving show with each season being something different. Although 3 was a bit lackluster, i enjoyed it, but it’d be a shame if they let the negative effects of the writers strike season sully the shows end.

I also always thought this would be the last season any ways?

  4. I’m surprised channel 7 will even bother fast tracking it if they’re just going to stick it into the 10:30pm slot.

I guess the title does sort of contradict the show now that it’s in it’s fourth season but I’m still loving it. It’s strange because as I watched the first season, I didn’t really enjoy it like I thought I would. But when I rewatch the first season, I know I’ll completely change my tune because I do feel very differently about the show now.

I hope it doesn’t get cancelled, I really don’t. We’ve already lost Boston Legal and possibly Monk and even though they’re all very different shows, they’re not shows that should end yet.

  5. Of course, It won’t really be 10.30, it’ll be more like 10.38 or 10.42 waiting for the show prior to finish running late, then the late news, then the ‘love you Queensland’ ad, then finally prison break. I noticed the season final 3 started 17 minutes late – was meant to be 10.20, started at 10.37. Some way to impress fans.

  6. Please don’t put 10.30pm timeslot for prison break because I think is late to watch the show and I don’t want to be axe from this show. PrisonBreak is a good show to watch and can’t wait for season 4 in Australia next month. Keep up and put more action story line to it.

  7. of course 10.30 an appropriate timeslot for the show…its struggled (both here and in the US) for a few seasons now, and it gets a decent enough audience at 10.30 to sustain it….bit annoying that Seven is waiting untill October, but hey, at least they are making an effort….they could move it to 9.30 for the summer and see if things improve

  8. I won’t be surprised if Prison Break is shown at 22:30 instead of earlier on in the night. Besides season one, the show has struggled to reach 1mil for ages. Also, I agree with almost everyone here, that the show should have ended after season two.

  9. I am not at all surprised with this. I always thought this would be the last season after season 3 was cut short due to the Writers Strike. I read somewhere that the show was only meant to go for 2 seasons, but was extended due to the positive viewer response. Even though season 3 and 4 were “add ons” for the sake of extending the show, the writers have done an excellent job with the scripts to keep it going for as long as it has. It’s a show like Lost, it can’t on on forever. I fully support ending it this season after a full 22 episode run.

  10. Prison Break is my fav show but wont be disappointed if this is its last season. You can’t just keep it going like a CSI etc: So hopefully it will be a good ending and all 22 episodes are shown. It increased its ratings in the US on monday and a positive was it was against returning shows. I just hope PB will last.

  11. yes i love prison break but i think everyone will be okay with this being the last season. i don’t expect to see any “save prison break” campaigns, or if there are they won’t have much support. although i do hope that it does get a full season.

  12. Before i saw the final 2 eps of season 2, i read that they were making season 3 and i thought that it should have ended at the end of season 2, but after the final 2 eps of season 2 I definitely wanted more. Tim, i highly recommend that you watch the first 2 seasons. They were so addictive.

  13. I’ll sound like a broken record by repeating that this season of PB has been great. However, it really should end this season, they could’ve ended it after season 2 instead of throwing Mike in prison AGAIN. And by the time Seven get around to airing PB I’ll bet at least SEVEN eps have aired in the US. Go figure.

  14. I agree. This season is fantasic. The best start of any of the previous 3 seasons. It’s a lot more fast paced, straight to the point and it is on top of my list of shows that I watch every week. It would be the perfect time to end the series. There is only so many times they can go to the well before it runs dry. With the storyline they are producing, I thtink they could wrap it up nicely and leave no lingering questions.

  15. I am enjoying it so far, in fact i think its the best season ive seen (though i only started in season 3). But i cant believe they were even considering going for a 5th season, when it first started i just assumed it would be a 1 season thing so i didn’t even bother to watch it.

  16. So far this season has been excellent. They have gotten straight down to the story and right into the action. Only a few episodes in but there has been nothing that was TOO unbelievable. Probably the best start to a season yet. But I agree it is time for it to come to an end…and this would be the season and storyline to wrap it all up.

  17. it’s a very good show but definately a format that was limited to a certain amount of series. Just like lost there is only so much you can do. But Prison break and lost top quality shows that you can watch over and over. It’s a shame Seven has been so offensive to it putting it on at 10:30 is a joke. But hey that’s seven you gotta love it or too bad we’re doin what we want with it!

Seven jerks, they mess with every show unless it’s DWTS or It takes two! Ego boys!
