WIN News cuts Queensland staff

Five regional newsrooms are to lose a journalist and cameraman under cuts by WIN TV.

Cutbacks at WIN Television will see the loss of one journalist and one cameraman from several of its Queensland newsrooms.

The staff cuts will affect Townsville, Cairns, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast.

But State news director for WIN, Steve Marshall, says the cuts will provide additional news services in Mackay, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay. He says there will be no change in local news content.

“We’ve always had an extra staff member in relation to reporting because a little while back we decided rather than bring on casuals we would have a spare person on deck all the time,” he said.

“So basically our news will not change at all, the amount of content won’t change.”

Queensland University of Technology media researcher John Flynn told the ABC it is vital commercial stations continue to provide quality local content.

“I think what the audience wants to see is quality local content delivered across the board. So if you are taking more stories from Townsville from the region with a regional focus to be aired in the Cairns market or vice-versa, the emphasis needs to be on the quality of the content, the journalist work that goes into it,” he said.

  1. Ageing, unemployed, but still very functional – would love a job as TV reporter.
Prepared to sign in (own) blood I won’t leave the area.
Absolutely committed to local stories getting on local TV so local people can see them. Anyone want me?

    Thought so!

  2. There no local news service for the wide bay. If it is.. It’s Bundaberg centric and shown at night around 11:30pm and produced in Townsville or Toowoomba

7 Local News is mostly Bundaberg Centric too. Cause they can’t seem to find a good reporter to highlight stories on the Fraser Coast or the reporters not actually in the fraser coast office. But instead the Bundaberg office

The problem with most reporters they don’t stay very long in the area were they started their career. Local news is considered graduate reporters training where your sent to report about the boring news about some festival and 1-3 years later you get an offer to be one of the state reporters

  3. They don’t do local content in Hervey Bay

Matter of fact Win TV provide no local news service and coverage in this area. They just give up cause 7 Local News does a good job and has almost all the audience whom want local news. The rest will watch national/state based news services
