More women’s sports come to ABC from this weekend following the launch of the Westfield W-League football.

Eight teams from around the country will comprise the matches airing live on ABC1 at 4pm Saturdays AEDT.

The Westfield W-League kicks-off this Saturday: Perth Glory v Sydney FC, Members Equity Stadium, Perth, (4.00pm AEDT).

The Westfield W-League season continues until the end of the year with a Finals Series to be played in January.

“There are 100,000 registered female football players involved in formal competition, and we estimate there are even more who play informally,” said FFA CEO, Ben Buckley.

He said that women’s football is in a growth phase internationally as well.

“In the past 12 months, the Westfield Matildas, Westfield Young Matildas and Westfield Under 17 Women played 30 international matches in countries as diverse as China, Brazil, New Zealand, Vietnam and the USA to name just a few.”

“We expect the Westfield W-League to be a big contributor to improved performances on the world football stage for Australia’s women’s teams.”

Women’s sport in Australia takes a giant leap forward this weekend with the start of the Westfield W-league, a new national competition for women’s football, to be televised on ABC1 from 4pm EDST on Saturdays.

Eight teams from across the country will play home and away matches for the next 10 weeks, culminating in the semis and final in January, 2009.

“Football is Australia’s fastest growing women’s sport and the Matildas have gained national and international recognition for their World Cup efforts, so this new league is a timely and important addition to our sporting landscape,” said Justin Holdforth, Executive Producer Sports & Events.

“The W-league is set to showcase our finest football talent, with all of Australia’s best senior and emerging players having signed up to be involved,” he said.

The competition will see teams from Queensland, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth involved in four matches each weekend. With the exception of Canberra, all the teams shadow the existing men’s A-league clubs and share their team names.

A full W-league match will be shown each Saturday afternoon from 4 pm and the broadcast will feature highlights from other games and interviews with key players.

Experienced ABC sports broadcaster, Steve Robilliard, will be joined by former Matildas captain Julie Murray, and sports journalist and author, Liz Deep-Jones.

Game one, this Saturday 25th October, will be Perth Glory hosting Sydney FC.

  3. Great to see. It’s just a shame the A-League will never be on FTA thanks to the commercial networks having thier heads firmly up the AFL’s… You know.

  5. This is great for Australian football and women’s sport to at least get some kind of coverage, even though it is only the ABC! I have to say that ABC sport’s coverage is often lacking in presentation.
