At The Movies: Oct 8 / 15

Coming up its new films by Ridley Scott, Alan Ball and, rather oddly, the 2006 feature version of Trailer Park Boys.

Next up for Margaret and David are the new Leonardo DiCaprio / Ridley Scott flick Body of Lies, which also includes Russell Crowe and Vince Colosimo (he’s almost in taken over Eddie’s “everywhere” mantle!). They will also review new films for Kate Hudson, Jason Biggs, Alec Baldwin, Alan Ball, Toni Collette, Vin Diesel (it gets a whopping 7% on Rotten Tomatoes), and a biography on boxer Lionel Rose.

And, inexplicably, the 2006 feature movie from Canada’s Trailer Park Boys.

At the Movies airs 10pm Wednesdays on ABC1.

Ep 35 – October 8

BODY OF LIES – Dir: Ridley Scott. Based on Washington Post columnist David Ignatius’s 2007 novel about a CIA operative, Roger Ferris, (Leonardo DiCaprio) who uncovers a lead on a major terrorist leader suspected to be operating out of Jordan. Also stars Russell Crowe and Vince Colosimo.

MY BEST FRIEND’S GIRL – Starring Academy Award Nominee Kate Hudson (You, Me and Dupree), Dane Cook (Mr Brooks), Jason Biggs (American Pie) and Alec Baldwin (The Good Shepherd) Smart, beautiful and headstrong, Alexis (Hudson) is the girl of Dustin’s (BIGGS) dreams. But after only five weeks of dating, the love-struck Dustin is coming on so strong that Alexis is forced to slow things down… permanently. Devastated and desperate to get her back, Dustin turns to his best friend, Tank (Cook), the rebound specialist. A master of seducing and offending women, Tank gets hired by freshly dumped guys to take their ex girlfriends out on the worst date of their lives, an experience so horrible it should send them running gratefully back to their beaus.

TOWEL HEAD – Director, Alan Ball. Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Alicia Erian. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Toni Collette, Maria Bello, Peter Macdissi, Summer Bishill.. A young Arab-American girl struggles with her sexual obsession, a bigoted Army reservist and her strict father during the Gulf War.

LIONEL – Aust Doc, In 1968 a young aboriginal boxer with a charming smile punched his way to history when he stopped Fighting Harada in Japan over fifteen rounds. He was the undisputed bantamweight champion of the world. He was the first black sporting hero. He was Australia’s first boxer with a world crown. He was Lionel Rose and two hundred and fifty thousand people hit the streets of Melbourne to welcome him back.

BABYLON AD – starring Vin Diesel, Gerard Depardieu, Charlotte Rampling, dir: Matthieu Kassovitz – A mercenary is hired to deliver a “package” – an innocent young woman raised in a monastery – from the ravages of a post-apocalyptic landscape of Eastern Europe to a destination in the teeming megalopolis of New York City. But this is hardly a typical job for the hardened gun-for-hire. As he, the young woman, and her fearsome guardian make the 6,000-mile trek, they are threatened by a religious sect that has taken a special interest in the woman – who may hold the secret to mankind’s salvation.

EP 36 October 15

BURN AFTER READING + interview with Tilda Swinton. Directed by the Coen brothers. At the headquarters of the CIA, analyst Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) arrives for a top-secret meeting. Unfortunately for Cox, the secret is soon out: he is being ousted. Cox does not take the news particularly well and returns to his home to work on his memoirs and his drinking, not necessarily in that order. His wife Katie (Tilda Swinton) is dismayed, though not particularly surprised; she is already well into an illicit affair with Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), a married federal marshal, and sets about making plans to leave coz for Harry.Elsewhere in the suburbs, and seemingly worlds apart, Hardbodies Fitness Centres employee Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) can barely concentrate on her work. She is consumed with her life plan for extensive cosmetic surgery, and confides her mission to can-do colleague Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt). Linda is all but oblivious to the fact that the gym’s manager Ted Treffon (Richard Jenkins) pines for her even as she arranges dates via the Internet with other men. When a computer disc containing material for the CIA analyst’s memoirs accidentally falls into the hands of Linda and Chad, the duo are intent on exploiting their find. As Ted frets, “No good can come of this,” events spiral out of everyone’s and anyone’s control, in a cascading series of darkly hilarious encounters.

TRAILER PARK BOYS – Set in a separate storyline not related to the “Trailer Park Boys” Television show, but with the same lovable characters. The boys get arrested for robbing an ATM machine and spend 18 months in jail. When the get out, they decide to pull off “The Big Dirty” which is to steal a large amount of coins because they are untraceable and quit their life of crime forever. Written by Wallace Entertainment + Anonymous (taken from IMDB.COM)

YOUNG@HEART – Prepare to be entertained by the inspiring individuals of Young@Heart, a New England senior citizens chorus that has delighted audiences worldwide with their covers of songs by everyone from The Clash to Coldplay.

As Stephen Walker’s documentary begins, the retirees, led by their strict musical director, are rehearsing their new show, struggling with a discordant Sonic Youth number and giving new meaning to James Brown’s “I Feel Good.”

What ultimately emerges is a funny and unexpectedly moving testament to the simple things these seniors value: old friendships, new challenges and a little time in the spotlight.

CROOKED BUSINESS – Crooked Business is a fast-paced comedy of errors, set on Australia’s notoriously trashy (always glitzy) Gold Coast. Two likeable crooks find themselves in a corner that’s going to take all their street smarts to get out of – because ‘if you’re gonna do crooked business, you’ve gotta do it straight’The film stars Australian comedian Anh Do, Jay Laga’aia (Nim’s Island), Fiarss Dirani (Black Balloon), Anthony Brandon Wong (The Matrix Revolutions) and Teo Gebert (Under the Radar). The film also features appearances by Titans Rugby League sensations Scott Prince and dual international Mat Rogers as two snatch and grab men who rob a pawn broker’s shop. Chris Nyst, whose first feature film Gettin’ Square landed David Wenham the Best Actor award at the 2003 AFI Awards and won Chris the Lexus IF Award for Best Screenplay, wrote and also directed Crooked Business.

MAN ON WIRE – Doco. The French acrobat Philippe Petit thrilled the world in 1974 when he snuck to the top of the World Trade Center and performed the world’s greatest high wire walk: unbelievably walking a tight rope back and forth between the famous twin towers.

In revisiting Petit’s story, director James Marsh (Wisconsin Death Trip, The King) has constructed a gorgeous, innovative and nail-biting celebration of a free spirit. Man on Wire combines home movies, interviews and snippets of heist films to capture Petit’s “artistic crime of the century.” This uplifting documentary was the winner of Sundance’s Grand Jury and Audience Awards.

  1. Trailer Park boys? How odd! The movie has been around ages!
They don’t even make the show anymore, 2007 was last season but they havnt ruled out a return in the future.
It will be fun watching these two “slum” it and try talk about a subject matter they would have not one clue about.
