Bathurst booms for Seven

V8 Supercars were king of the mountain with audiences on the weekend, bigger than wanna-be singers or dancing celebrities.

Seven’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 notched up some impressive figures with an average of 1.249m viewers across its six and a half hour telecast yesterday.

That’s a figure better than Australian Idol and Dancing with the Stars could manage in the evening.

It peaked at 1.893m.

The audience was evenly divided in Sydney (383,082) and Melbourne (382,723) with 247,779 in Brisbane, 142,554 in Adelaide and 93,468 in Perth.

Adding regional markets it averaged 1.93m and peaked at 2.85m, but Nine just managed to win Sunday night by a slim 1%.

For the various sessions across 5 city metro, average figures were:

Friday
1:00-4:00pm 160,354

Saturday
Early 499,528
Top 10 Shootout 771,565
Afternoon 660,046

Sunday
Morning 263,325
Pre-Race Entertainment 600,408
Final Countdown 835,879
The Race 1,249,606
Post Race Presentations 1,253,854

Including regional viewers, Seven says more than 5.6 million Australians watched all or part of the coverage across Friday – Saturday. Whilst some of them would have been repeat viewers coming back each day, there’s no doubting the event was a big hit.

Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup won the Peter Brock Trophy.

  1. To Craig: according to Seven’s press release on October 15 last year, the Bathurst 1000 race peaked at 1.957 million in the five major cities and averaged 1.357 million across the 7 hour coverage. So this year’s figures are lower than 2007.
