BBC unveils Knowledge, CBeebies.

BBC launched its two new channels to media last night. Now with 5 channels the British empire is slowly taking over!

The Subscription TV industry gathered for the launch of BBC Worldwide’s two new channels last night in Sydney.

Managing Director Tony Iffland (pictured) welcomed guests to a presentation of BBC Knowledge and CBeebies channels which launch on November 1st. The channels were themed under the slogan “TV to Really Get Excited About.”

CBeebies new host Tara Colegrave was in London, brushing up on the new programming, but sent a video welcome package.

Gathered amongst the guests was Foxtel’s Brian Walsh, Patrick Delaney and Brendan Moo and regular Foxtel host Mike Hammond.

TV Tonight was particularly taken with the chilly British-inspired weather that seemed to accompany the event for late October (the coldest October day in 30 years). That’s some event organising!

The new channels join with BBC’s existing three channels including UK TV, BBC HD and BBC News World. At this rate it’s almost as if the empire is set to reclaim the colonies!

  1. BBC Worldwide, which is the organisation running all the BBC channels here (including World News, CBeebies, etc), is funded by commercial advertising, They use some of the resources paid for with the license fee but for the most part they’re entirely seperate.

Just like ABC Commercial (who run ABC Shops and other enterprises for profit) but on a much larger scale.

  2. Richard, the BBC is funded by a licence fee that every UK viewer pays to view television. Australia used to have a licence fee back when TV started in Australia (usually a combined TV/radio licence) but was abolished around thirty years ago.

  3. What a contrast between our ABC and the BBC. I don’t know exactly how the BBC is funded, but it just goes to show how you can make a successul broadcasting company without the use of commercial advertising.
