Bumped: Californication, The Office.

Another fastracked US series takes a hit. TEN squeezes NCIS into Sundays pushing David Duchovny and Steve Carell back.

Another fastracked US series has taken a hit, with Network TEN indicating it will push Californication back an hour beginning this Sunday.

Instead it will squeeze a repeat of NCIS into 9:40pm with a repeat of “Hometown Hero.”

Californication will start an hour later.

Sadly, this means The Office won’t start until 11:20pm either, which is very late for a school night. That’s likely to anger fans who have been waiting for months for the show to return. Some even suggested it would get better ratings at 7pm than Friends. But TEN treats the Steve Carell comedy as something of an acquired taste. Then again, Two and a Half Men was a flop for Nine until they just left it on over summer and it boomed.

As for the David Duchovny drama, it rated 543,000 viewers on Sunday, on track with its season premiere of 546,000.  It did have a good lead in with ARIAs 1.13m.

‘Seriously,’ how many viewers does TEN expect to get at 9:30pm on a Sunday?

We watch with some scepticism to see if NCIS can travel past 750,000 -otherwise what’s the point of all the anguish it will cause?

  1. I reckon TEN need to go through and just redo their entire prime-time lineup each night.. Better to get it all fixed in one big lump rather than moving shows around one at a time and in return shoving good shows at 11:20PM on a Sunday night.

  2. That sucks. I just hope it has nothing to do with the religious nutter group “Salt Shakers” succeeding in having ten companies withdraw their advertisements from the show. They include Just Car Insurance, the show’s major sponsor, from 26 October onwards. The list of these companies can be found on their website. Write to them/email them and ask them why they place the views of a tiny organisation that believes Harry Potter lures children into witchcraft ahead of those of the 500,000+ viewers who have tuned into Californication over the past three weeks.

  3. Nick on October 21st, 2008 8:47 pm R, is will and grace going to start on ten next week?

Yes, starts next Monday the 27th. Ten are airing short (and i mean short) promos at the end of most of their shows. It’s also been confirmed on the MediaSpy forums. (see the Network Scheduling Thread)

  4. channel ten here are some pointers for you
    1. repeats are bad. very bad. we already know whats going ot happen so why bother repeating it??
    2. why not use ten HD to is full potential instead of just simulcasting everything other then after 10:30
    3. bumping shows to a later timeslot will lose viewers. then before you know it. the show will be off.
    4. axing shows after 4 weeks of being on the air is not cool. give the show time to settle.
    5. replacing new episodes with more repeats is also bad. because then i switch off and think new eps wont be here for ages.

in conclusion. channel ten u need a serious readjustment before the ’09 season or bad things might happen

  5. Wait, my Office season one and two DVDs are rated M, so wouldn’t that mean Ten wouldn’t be able to put it on at 7 without editing it?

It’s my dream that Ten would treat The Office the way Seven treats 30 Rock; on at a steady timeslot, and up to date with America. That’ll be the day.

  6. OOhhh for Gods sake ten, what u think by doin this its gonna help u??? by now u shouldnt care, u should just leave stuff exactly where it is and run it through its whole season. Try to be the network with the brains and leave GOOD programs on at one time, What are you going to achieve, seven and nine will still win sorry to say. You got new NCIS on 8.30 tues, theres no need for anymore. That p**** me off too, whatever slot is failing on a network they just shove one of their top rating shows in there until u got one on evry night of the week, people get sick of it and then dont watch it!

  7. and ten wonder why they are struggling so much… Take a risk ten! All year they have served up tried and true formats- they have to realise that viewers are tiring of the same thing year after year. Now with will and grace at 7pm they have missed their chance to find a new hit.

  8. they could’ve at least tried the Office at 7pm Weeknights, rather than buying the rights to that terrible excuse for a sitcom “Will and Grace”, which a 2 second promo just told me is starting next week in that slot..

  9. And so it begins.

I’m still hoping they’ll air all the remaining s3 episodes of The Office, but I’m not holding my breath.

I kind of wish they’d just put it on HD (even though we don’t have digital) at a regular decent time, because then at least it might have the chance to build an audience. I’ve already seen every episode from, um, alternative sources anyway.

  10. This is insane but I don’t care, I already record Californication so I’ll just set the time an hour later!

NCIS on Sundays after Rove is not going to rate much better IMO

On the bright side maybe they won’t need to censor the show in a later time slot?

  11. Tut tut Ten. Maybe Leckie was right and Ten are running around like headless chooks. The answer is staring you in face Ten.

1/ If you want to persist with Idol – cut it back, pare down meaningless judges comments, interviews, let the talent (kids) be judged just on their singing ability. Sunday show finished by 8.30 PM (Mon results show 30 mins tops)
2/ ROVE is your major network star.Put him on at decent time and give him more latitiude…90 mins show to finish right on 10 PM
3/ Make 10 pm -12 pm Sunday night your night for unusual (how to categorise shows – Californication, The office etc…

I love NCIS but Iwont be watching a repeat on Sun night. I might watch californication or The Office or Bev Hills 90210 or…one of your other unseen ehows..Ten – cut out the repeats…

  12. Yes 2.5 Men was a flop in 2007 but when it first started it was a hit getting around 1.5m viewers. So basically it’s back to where it began ratings wise..

As for NCIS I can’t get enough so I’m happy with this move.

  13. Actually, Californication usually starts at 10.20pm following Rove’s lead in, so 540k viewers is pretty damn good, IMO.

This is an INCREDIBLY stupid move on Ten’s part. How can they possibly expect Californication to build an audience when it’s already in such an inconsistent timeslot? Plus, NCIS isn’t even remotely compatible with neither Rove nor Californication, so Cali’s ratings will only continue to dip further. At least Cali and The Office are somewhat compatible because they’re both drama/comedies.

Not happy, Ten. And as if it wasn’t bad enough that they continue to BLATANTLY censor the show.

  14. You sons of b****** Ten.
You’ve lost a viewer for a while until you win me back. Never touch Californication!! It’s now on way too late. You’re going to end up giving it the old Ch 7 Scrubs / 30 Rock treatment.

  15. I dont have much hope for The Office when it returns, If anything, it will probably turn up on their HD channel only(I am a bit surprised that it hasn’t as yet).
