Now it’s Top Gear Russia

Stig.... Stiggo.....Stigski....he's practically a franchise.

It seems we’re not alone. Russia has picked up the local format rights to create its own Top Gear.

The 15-episode run on the commercial Russian network REN TV’s is due to air at the end of the year, and will premiere on the back of season 12 of the original UK show.

The new show is being made by Russian production company MIR Reality Production, in what BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) has dubbed its biggest deal with REN TV and first production partnership with MIR Reality.

Top Gear has had quite a following in Russia for some time, and of course, Top Gear magazine’s Russian edition has been a great success since it launched in 2004,” said BBCWW’s Adam Waddell. “So it’s only appropriate that the Russian audience is getting its own version of the show.”

A BBCWW spokesman said a number of other expressions of interest have been made for the format rights, with further agreements expected to follow.

The US also has rights to produce a local version, expected to air on NBC mid 2009.
