School principal sues Oprah

After allegations of sexual misconduct at her school for girls in South Africa, Oprah is being sued by the former principal.

The former principal of Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy for Girls, who is suing the most powerful woman in entertainment for R2.1-million ($AU$250,000+), says she “Just wanted Oprah to say ‘Sorry’”.

Nomvuyo Mzamane was fired following allegations of sexual abuse last year at the prestigious girl’s school, set up by Winfrey to empower young South African women.

“We were forced to file this law- suit because we didn’t get what we wanted a year ago — a public apology,” her attorney, Tim McGowan said.

Allegations of sexual misconduct by a matron led to the arrest of Tiny Makope, who is due back in court this month on charges of indecent assault and crimen injuria.

Mzamane, who was the assistant head of operations at a private school in Philadelphia, US, until she started work at Winfrey’s school in 2006, is believed to be looking for compensation from Winfrey for “ruining her professional career.”

According to McGowan: “[Winfrey] went on television and ruined [Mzamane’s] reputation. So she wanted [Winfrey] to go back on TV and restore her reputation.”

McGowan is claiming that Winfrey “launched what amounted to a defamatory campaign” against Mzamane last year by implying that she was “untrustworthy, failed the students of the academy, did not care about the students , knew of the alleged physical and sexual abuse and participated in a cover- up of the alleged abuse”.
