Should ‘Justin’ come out?

Into its third season, but Ugly Betty isn't about to out 'Justin' just yet. Minor spoilers...

Ugly Betty’s Mark Indelicato says “Justin” isn’t about to come out of the closet anytime soon.

“No. Not yet,” he says.

“I don’t really think it really needs to be addressed because Justin is only 14, 15.

“He’s still finding himself in different ways.”

Indelicato’s character is said to be based on the early years of Silvio Horta, the show’s head writer and executive producer.

“I think Silvio would want to address what Justin wants to do career wise,” Indelicato explains. “Does he want to work at Mode? Or does he want to be a Broadway star?

“I don’t think it would be addressed this season or even next season.”

Meanwhile in the next US season ‘Justin’ gets a friend.

“His friend was, at one point, his bully. So it’s kind of cool how two separate worlds come together.

“The other kid is a jock and Justin obviously isn’t. They become friends after finding out they’re both auditioning for a role in the musical, ‘Billy Elliot,’ which the friend is ashamed to admit.”

It could be some time before Aussie viewers get to see the storyline, given Seven won’t return season two until summer.

  1. Given the dearth of GLBT characters on network television, it would be great to have a positive, young, gay role model on a prime time show.

Hopefully if they decide to confirm Justin’s sexuality, it will be handled in a sensitive and meaningful way, and not in the gratuitious manner so prevalent during sweeps week in the US.

If Justin finds someone special or even if he just decides he’s ok with who he is and ready to share that with his loved ones, it would be a great step for the show and for the visibility of the GLBT community on television.

  2. does he need to come out?

yeah ok hes not going to have a relationship yet, but I figure he already knows what he wants, and that will show when he is the right age.
