C7 appeal begins

The media courtcase from hell is revived as Seven commences its appeal against a scathing judgement by the court.

Here we go again. Channel Seven has begun its appeal against the now-infamous C7 courtcase last year.

In July 2007 Justice Sackville dismissed the claim made by Seven against many of its rivals, including News Limited, Telstra, Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd and Optus, for allegedly conspiring to “kill” its pay-TV arm, C7, in a battle over broadcast rights for AFL football and rugby league.

The overlong lawsuit (it started in 2002) saw Justice Sackville rule against Seven on all counts, while severely criticising the network.

Justice Sackville labelled Seven as “far from a helpless and innocent victim”, even suggesting they were hypocritical in regards to the issue of price-ramping of broadcast rights. He called the $200m court costs “scandalous.”

He added, “If the parties imagine they have reached the end of their part in the litigation, and that an end to the costings and the uncertainty associated with this litigation is in sight, I think they are seriously mistaken.”

  1. you got to remember they had the right to bid last for the right to afl from 2002 to 2006. they didnt even make a bid. they didnt even make a bid in the other sport as well

  2. its a no win sittuation. they had the chance to make a final bid on the afl and they didnt even make a bid. they seem to think that they should be the only network that should cover sports. this one will be thrown out straight away
