Masterchef to replace Big Brother

A local version of a BBC cooking format will replace Big Brother on TEN six nights a week for 10 weeks.

First news from the TEN launch is trickling in….

Big Brother is to be replaced by a 10 week local version of a BBC series, MasterChef Australia.

FremantleMedia will produce the series to air six nights a week.

The show has seen a number of format changes in the UK but essentially involves amateurs cooking  including inventing a dish from scratch in 50 minutes, working a lunchtime shift at a busy restaurant, cooking a final meal of two courses, with ingredients of the contestants’ choice in one hour etc. It originally ran from 1990 to 2001 and was revived in 2005 with two judges.

Rush has also been approved for a second series.

Bondi Rescue is back.

Guerrilla Gardeners and Recruits are also announced.

More to come….

  1. Masterchef goes large shown recentl on Seven was good entertainment – so much depends on choice of host/s and selection of contestants.

I fear Ten/Freemantle will pick someone in vein of unlikeable Peter Everitt or annoying Jackie O as hosts and get the usual blonde bimbos/surfie type blokes as contestants.

Not really a 7pm strip show though ,might work in right timeslot. .

  2. Especially ‘celebrity’ and ammatuer cooking shows… I think cooking shows should be wholesome, like cook and the chef (what a beauty), or hughsy… Cooking is about the love and passion for cooking, not about big names, big $$, big exposure, or whatever.

  3. The BBC version is shown on Prime sometimes and I find it very boring.

    Not my cup of tea.

Mainly aimed at the older generation IMO.

I suppose they’re trying to gain an older audience…good luck Ten, you’ll need it.

  4. This could be great !! My wife is a ‘cook’ and like many hubbys I think she could run the pants off Gordon Ramsay and all the rest in their dream world of cooking. She cooks for a family and that’s what they will want to see. She cooks for me and the family, she cooks for the homeless and she does a little catering but at the end of the day what is needed is something that connects to the audience – not boneless stuffed quail on a bed of who knows what. cooked by someone who either swears or has a fig up his arse!!. Love to enter her – bet she will win!!!!

  5. The English version has become this family’s favourite food show, so the success of this will depend on the hosts. The English version’s John Tourode is an ex-pat Aussie, so maybe he could be brought out for the first series.

  6. i’m not one to write shows off before i’ve seen them. and out of the credible opinions up there it sounds like it will be good.

but good or not, with ramsay, jamie, and chopping block all pulling shocking numbers lately it will be very hard to motivate people to watch.

  7. Good god. Doesnt sound very interesting.. I hope its a good show, I do because they need a new, high rating show. I want BB on again.. but the way it was with Gretel. Never going to happen! All the best to them, hope it works but I doubt it.

  8. Is Masterchef like Top Chef on Arena? If so it’ll do well, I hate cooking shows but I don’t mind top chef…

And yes it seems an acknowledgement that Ten need a stable format with older appeal to anchor 7pm.

  9. I disagree

I think its great that TEN are trying something different in the 7pm timeslot. 9 have the sitcoms covered and 7 the soaps

TEN have seen an opportunity to capitalise by offering something more unique to whats currently on offer

IMO much better than Big Brother and Sitcom reruns

  10. I think Masterchef looks great and it is in a watchable time slot. The english one is buried in the day time on seven.

Agree with Ooh Me Plums! (love the handle name) host is vital to the success I wonder who it will be.

  11. I agree with Dee and Dino. Rush is a great addition for another season. Considering it was rating higher than The Strip and up against All Saints and a later timeslot this is great news 🙂
