Nine nabs English Super League

Nine has signed a deal to air the UK's Super League and Carnegie Challenge Cup matches as part of a new three-year contract.

Channel Nine has signed a deal to screen the English Super League competition for 2009.

Television rights for the Super League and Carnegie Challenge Cup matches have been sold to Nine as part of a new three-year contract.

Up to 70 televised Super League games and nine Carnegie Challenge Cup games are said to be shown live on terrestrial channel Nine. At those kind of numbers, there is the possibility they may air on Nine’s secondary digital channel.

CEO David Gyngell said: “Rugby League is one of Nine’s premium franchises through the NRL Premiership, State of Origin and international coverage.

“So embracing the English Super League competition is a natural extension of our commitment.

“Not only will our audience see more high quality rugby league, but with many former NRL stars now playing in the UK, we’ll be watching a lot of very familiar players.”

  1. why is it a knock on when the ball dose not even touch the ground it should be play on while the ball is still in the air no wonder why me a most of my friends think super league is crap

  2. channel 9,s showing of the english super league over the last couple of years is a disgrace!! showing super league matches on sunday and monday night,s after midnight !! does anyone still have a video recorder because thats what you need to watch these matches !! give it back to fox sports !!!

  3. Channel Nine are a disgrace. They have rights to NRL, no games shown ‘Live’ in Victoria even though the games that have been shown have had a sizeable audience. I for one will not watch anything on this badly managed channel — but then again, when ya seen “Skippy does Dallas” or whatever I guess you look forward to re-seeing it at prime time. — Total S**t

  4. In Melbourne we didn’t even get the recent Challenge Cup final that was screened in Sydney and Brisbane.
I know that we have absolutely no chance of getting the weekly league games down here.
Why the hell do channel 9 want these rights if they aren’t going to show them in all states.
It was worth having Foxtel just to see these weekly games, just another example of why channel 9 have totally gone to the dogs!

  5. Just contacted Ch9 Perth and they are no longer showing and Super League or Challenge Cup in Perth. They didn’t even know if the eastern states would be showing the final.
If you are not going to show it Ch9 then let Fox or another chanel have a go.
    Not happy.
Huddersfield make the final for the first time since the 60’s.
    Ch9 = c@#$’s

  6. Channel 9 Perth shows 1 game a week and thats in Thursday night on HD, 1 guess what it is agains on 9 Digital…. The NRL footy show. Whatever moron does the scheduling for Perth should be at the dole queue, its useless. Take if off 9 and give it to ONE HD, maybe we will get decent coverage then

  7. Nine showing Super League what a joke as in the 1st 2 weeks off games all they are showing 1 game a week not the 2 they would be on Foxtel like last year

  8. ” barrett: I believe that Nine will be showing league in HD as of next year ”

I’ll believe it when i see it!

And how many games will we see in HD?I’ll be surprised if more than one is shown.

  9. Problem is the games are not of the best quality. I mean, look at the RL world cup. Aust V NZ in the final. Wow! What a shock.

I’d be more excited if they announced the English Premier League would be on FTA.

  10. I agree with blaz. The time difference means most games will probably screen on nine’s main channel live in the small hours of the morning. I’m not expecting them to replay it is later in the day.

  11. Goodbye to decent coverage in Southern States (unless, maybe, it’s on the digital channel).

What is the obsession with exclusive rights? Fox Sports should have the rights, and Nine should show (say) 1 game a week. Would be far more appropriate.

  12. barrett: I believe that Nine will be showing league in HD as of next year. But the rest of your points are quite accurate.

I’m looking forward to this though, ESL games are played quite differently to NRL games so it’ll be good to be able to watch both on FTA.

  13. Looking at the disdain that Nine currently treats the NRL with ( no HD,games broadcast delayed, not all teams shown etc this is a bizarre deal.

Will probably use content as cheap filler for late night / early morning schedules.

  14. “Rugby League is one of Nine’s premium franchises through the NRL Premiership, State of Origin and international coverage.”

and it will only rate “well” in 2 states!
