Nine’s summer of Gossip

Gossip Girl finally gets a Free to Air screening, along with Survivor: Gabon, ER, Pushing Daisies, Fringe, McLeod's Daughters and Temptation.

Gossip Girl, Pushing Daisies, Survivor: Gabon, Temptation, Fringe, ER, McLeod’s Daughters -are all coming to Channel Nine over summer.

Gossip Girl, the teen soap set in affluent Manhattan high school circles, has been screening on FOX8 (Pay TV has season two from December) but finally gets a Free to Air screening. Nine, which on-sold the rights to FOX8, will start with Series One. It is the second time the network on-sold a series by writer / producer Josh Schwartz, after it let TEN take The OC.

Also on Nine over summer is the long overdue premiere of Pushing Daisies. The quirky, colourful tale about a pie maker with the ability to revive the dead (or to end their life) with a touch of his finger was due to screen during the ratings season, but it didn’t eventuate. The series launched to much acclaim in the US before the writer’s strike, but now appears close to ending. It is created by Bryan Fuller (Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me) and produced by film producer Barry Sonnenfeld.

Survivor fans will get the Gabon series, which recently started in the US. It is expected to air at the end of Survivor: Micronesia.

ER is finally back with series 14, it’s penultimate season.

Other shows taken off air also return: McLeod’s Daughters, Fringe, Battlefronts, The Closer and the last (ever?) batch of Temptation episodes. Big Bang Theory returns from next week.

Another medical factual series The Waiting Room will premiere. Deadly Surf and Australian Geographic return.

But there is still more Two and a Half Men along with CSI, Cold Case, Australia’s Funniest Home Videos.

As always Nine’s summer programming is underpinned by its cricket coverage.

What do you think? A few treats to lure you to the box?

  1. Great to see that Survivor: Gabon airing straight after Micronesia. I’ve been watching (through downloads), and the season as been great so far. Maybe, S19 (starts February in the US) could be fast tracked? The show has quite a good following here.

Anyway, will probably only tune in for Mcleods as I’ve seen most of the other shows through d/ls.

  2. Horrible lineup. Gossip Girl might be fun but the rest are turd. Get rid of freakin 2.5 men, do what you did in the Olympics and play Til Death in its slot Nine. At least its a break from that horribly overrated show. Looks like Seven’s running off with all the good content this summer. And where is Chuck and Moonlight, two quality shows?

  3. ER stopped mid season 13 so Im hoping Nine intend to show the rest of season 13 prior to season 14 as [spoiler] get married towards the end of season 13. Fingers crossed 9 give these shows a chance to garner an audience. Taking things off after 2 or 3 episodes is signing their death sentence.

  4. Fringe – if that’s the best NINE have to offer this summer, and it is, then NINE may as well forget ratings all together. Maybe they should do away with their whole business model of playing good shows at popular times, for advertising’s sake.

Heck, just play KAK for 23/7, and the overall amount of BS shows of NINE would remain the same, yet their costs would go down considerably…

Am I crazy, or am I just being cynical?

  5. i know we’re not supposed to talk about ratings during not ratings, but do people realise how bad some of these shows will go.

take fringe for example. it was getting in the 600’s in primetime, now subtract downloaders, people that were tricked by the “epic new drama” ect. and never liked it anyway, people that simply cbf watching again, people that don’t know its on, people that prefer a competing show, people in bed (assuming 9 will put it on l8r than 8:30) and people on holidays. and then of course the lack of trust that it might be axed again and never seen again.

can’t wait for mcleods, ch9 will have to air it twice a week if they want to play all 20 eps.

good to see them continuing 2.5, maybe this will help speed up its downfall =)

  6. Excellent schedule. A shame that these weren’t shown during ratings period though. Gossip Girl is reaaaally good. It’ll be great to re-watch the whole season. And finally! Pushing Daisies. Can’t wait till Fringe or Big Bang Theory either. But where are Terminator, Moonlight and Chuck?

  7. arghhhh where is moonlight!!!! i have waited a whole year, literally for them to show the last 8 episodes, this cannot be happening, please tell me this list is not complete.

  8. Hanging out for Gossip Girl, but the fact that Nine axed the OC in the summer after only 2 eps plus the fact that many may have seen it on FOX8 does not bode well.

  9. Any treats there to lure me to the box? Hmm, let me compare with my 1 terabyte downloaded-TV drive…

    ER: season *15* episode 6
    Survivor Gabon: episode 8
Big Bang Theory: season *2* episode 6
Pushing Daisies: season *2* episode 5
    Fringe: season 1 episode 7
Gossip Girl: season 2 episode 10

What on earth would have been around to tempt me to the box if I waited for all of this to be screened by Nine? 🙂

And I’m still amazed that ER and McLeod’s Daughters (though the latter I personally have no interest in) were abandoned by Nine. I know many people who were upset and mystified at their removal. ER particularly, since Nine then proceeded to re-run an old season of it in the latter half of the year!

  10. Nine summer lineup looks far better than Nine’s continual Ramsay& Two and half men over saturation.

Odds are Nine will still “only show 2 to 3 eps in a row, then change timeslot so unless we visit this site, we will have no idea.

P.S. Can’t wait for Nine’s pubicity machine to get into gear.
    – Most popular drama in the US
    – Best drama since….
    – Outstanding comedy event…
    – Show that changed the way TV was viewed…

    Blah, blah, blah…

Instead of ..we previously took it off air as we did not have guts to give it decent run and out network flunkies and their kids just loved Ramsay & Sheen.

Hmmn, maybe we can get Gordan & Charlie to star in comedy set in restaurant ??

  11. Pleasing to see there are some quality shows returning to both 7 and 9 over the summer, especially for those who don’t have access to downloads.
I agree that Season 14 ER should have been on long before now – most of us die hard fans are already downloading the final 15th season, but I know some people who have been eagerly awaiting Season 14…

  12. I wish survivor have captioned and it’s not fair we are deaf, unable what they saying and please put captioned on. It is very frustrating because the survivor is on late around 10.30pm. Please make it earlier. Thanks

  13. Let us not forget that most of these shows on 9 will be shown and then interrupted by the Cricket season, first Tests and then One dayers, so while it will be good to see some shows it will likely be one week on and one week off most of Summer.
