Seven shafts golfing great

After two decades of commentary, Seven tells golf champ Jack Newton he is no longer needed -via email.

Aussie golf champ Jack Newton has been told by Channel Seven he is not required for its coverage of the forthcoming Australian Masters and Australian Open, after more than two decades.

Newton, 58, received a brief email from Seven boss of sport, Saul Shtein, telling him he was not part of the network’s future plans.

This year is the last of a long-term deal by the Seven network to telecast both the Open and the Masters and, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, industry sources believe Seven will cease televising golf afterwards.

Newton said,  “I must be an old has-been now.”

According to the newspaper, Shtein advised Newton against going to Channel TEN but encouraged him to try Fox Sports.

  1. Tony – he was only hired for the Australian tournaments.channel 7 don’t have rights for US tournaments.

its a shame as he was a very good commentator. to inform him by email is very cowardly.

  2. Class act Seven, pure class.

P.S. yes, seven management, that was sarcastic, just in case Network execs can’t read between the lines.

One can hope that all network execs go back to school of good manners and logic.

  3. i looked forward to Jack and Sandy Roberts commentary each year – they bounced off each other like the pros they are. Tops shelf commentary now gone – Seven will have a sour old last year of coverage it would seem.

  4. Hope TEN pick him up for their events, they should pick up the masters and the open from next year you would think. Seven don’t have right to give him career advice.

not going to be the same golf coverage without him this year.

  5. strange….I thought 7 learnt from 9 how to hold onto whats good for them long term? Golf doesn’t really lght up the ratings anyway? He should not worry as TEN HD will pick it up and if they are smart he will have a job there. “If they are smart” .
