Why Love My Way 4 never happened

EXCLUSIVE: Why, oh, why, was there no 4th season of Love My Way? Producer John Edwards talks to TV Tonight.

If there has ever been one burning question that is continually asked by readers of this site it is this: Why, oh why, did Love My Way not continue into a fourth season?

“I’ve just finished watching series 3 in one marathon sitting and can’t believe there’s no more to come,” says Miss Jude.
“I am an American working in Japan and I have a lot of Aussie friends who turned me on to LMW. I am shocked that they would just stop after Season 3!” -Hoeydancer
“I have just finished watching all 3 seasons of Love My Way in a 3 week period. I am absolutely hooked and very disappointed to read that there will be no more future seasons.” -Georgina.
“I am so shattered there wont be a season 4, my husband & I have just got hooked on showtime” -Ang.
“Why why why no series 4? Am completely hooked and wonder why this superb series has never seen the light of day in the UK.” -Lucy.
“I’m so disappointed there wont be a season 4! We have just watched all three seasons and we want more!” -Angela.

The list goes on…. TV Tonight heard your plea and went straight to the source for an explanation. Producer John Edwards, who produced the series with Claudia Karvan, was heartened by the response, and said work on a fourth series had actually begun.

“Claudia and I wanted to (do it),” he said.

“At first Claudia was just tired and we thought we had said all we had to say. And then we thought we’d have a look at doing it again, and we were trying to figure out a way that we could wrestle it onto Free to Air as well.

“The whole show was designed so that if it was successful it would go from Pay to Free to Air. Nobody was expecting it to be so successful that they wouldn’t let it go to Free to Air,” he said.

From 2004 to 2007 Love My Way attracted such acclaim and picked up a swag of awards that it became the darling of the Pay TV industry. As arguably the industry’s first big original drama hit, there were behind the scenes manoeuvres to keep the property as a Pay exclusive. So hot was the property, it was even bumped from FOX8 to W to the top tier Showtime channel.

“Even though it’s sold very well, the deals had all been structured on the wrong kind of premises,” said Edwards. “We haven’t made any money out of it. Everybody else has. We’ve made nothing out of it.”

Edwards says there were some discussions with Free to Air broadcasters regarding a fourth series but they fell through.

“We were trying to make Series 4 as a way of wrestling control of it back. We got halfway down the track and then got a bit of a surprise. Basically the ABC didn’t want it, which surprised us. They wanted to buy the reruns, cheaply. They had their own shows.”

However, rights to the first series will become free in around six to twelve months which will mean it can be re-sold to another broadcaster. That’s good news for those who want to see the show on Free to Air.

“As soon as it becomes free it will be out there and I think there will be plenty of buyers.”

  1. I absolutely loved the whole three series and am hoping with fingers crossed they bring out series 4. I began watching the show when it first came out and then had 3 children close together, lost control of my sleeping habits and TV never happened as was always too tired to watch. I finally watched the 3 series on DVD after cathcing the marathon of series 2 on austar and could not stop thinking about it. Bring it back I say… as has been said before.

  2. Loved the series. What was wrong with Series 3 was partly Ben Mendelsohn’s Lewis. He is a superb actor and I have seen him in many films in which he has been outstanding. But somehow his character Lewis gloomed Series 3. Ben can be lighthearted and hilarious if required so it must have been the writing of his character. And Tom’s relationship was a bit fluffy compared to the integrity of previous series. Solution: a series 4 to put things together again . It is a great achievement to get thro so many seasons with the honesty of this series. Soapies do it all the time but with a total lack of integrity of emotions etc. This series is real art where the slightest flaw shows as it is so perfect in most ways compared to the usual shallow shows that tv puts on where there is no attempt at integrity.

  3. Wow. Don’t have foxtell but watched DVD all in a row and am emotionally drained. Never been manipulated so brilliantly by a show. The acting was sensational and it was wonderful to see such ‘real’ people involved in ‘real’ life. Thankyou to cast and crew.

  4. Oooh, I love LMW!!

Me and my best friend watched the first 2 sesaons together and were SAD it came to an end. We were so happy with the third season, and now I’m still hoping for season 4…

I’m from Holland and not that many people know LMW, but I’m a fan. Absolutely!! It’s realistic, and easy to understand what all of the characters are going through.

  5. David, Do you think you should be promoting your own show on a Love my Way blog, get over it, we dont want to see Tangle, we want Love My Way!

    1. Tina… one of the funniest comments I’ve ever had the pleasure to approve. How is Tangle “my own show?” I have no connection to the show. This isn’t a Love My Way blog, it’s a TV blog. And last I checked it was my blog. I wrote this story because Love My Way was a fab show and many fans were sad it is not returning. Find me another journo who took the time to find out the same info for fans like you. So don’t shoot the messenger. Otherwise the answer may very well be, “get over it” yourself, the show isn’t coming back.

  6. love this show. this is possibly the best australian series ever. i watched one episode and then went out and brought all 3 series and i want more!

  7. So saddening to discover the series so late – I bought all 3 series recently on DVD – and find there is no further episodes.

Love My Way is without dispute, the finest Australian Drama ever produced.

Congratulations to the talented producers and actors.

I would love to see just one more series, even one more episode.

Still, the series legacy is the reminder of the fragility, beauty, and weakness characteristic to us all. Observing Frankies familial relationships as an outsider certainly encourages us to appreciate our own relationships warts and all.

Praise to all who contributed to this outstanding program.

  8. Consider yourselves lucky you got to see it at all when it first came out. I only discovered the series recently 2 years after it finished. Thanks goodness for public libraries that’s all I can say. Such brilliant drama has no place on pay TV particularly when we are subjected to such dribble on the commercial stations.
