Desperate Housewives creator / producer Marc Cherry is in talks about continuing the hit series for another two seasons. Cherry has long maintained he saw the show winding up after its seventh season.
Currently in its fifth season, it is yet to be renewed beyond May, but the “five year leap” has received positive acclaim.
“I started recently talks with (ABC Entertainment president) Steve McPherson and (ABC Studios president) Mark Pedowitz about continuing the show for a ninth season,” Cherry was quoted saying at a cake-cutting ceremony for the show’s 100th episode. “We’re going to find a way to make it work.
“The five-year jump seems to have reinvigorated interest in the show, and the ratings are terrific,” Cherry said, referring to the show’s story leaping five years into the future.
ABC confirmed the plan but stressed that no deals have been made.
Seven is expected to air series 5 in February.

yeh i really hope it can remain in its 8.30 slot here on 7 till the very end of its run
i’ve seen the first two eps of season 5 and think its just as brilliant as its first season. All new plots, story line, characters and still the perfect blend of drama and comedy
I hope the show will continue for as long as possible. It’s fantastic.
I must admit that when I first heard about the five-year jump, I was really afraid that it would ruin the show. I haven’t seen any of season five yet but hearing all these great things about it makes me less worried.
Yes, I agree with Tonmy K. I would rather see DH and others start in the new year, that way we can see it uniterupted. When you think of the past year, how messy the networks had trated shows, especially fasttracked ones. The majority of shows had numereous stop, starts in the season and changed timeslots, then there were some shows that went straight from a cliffhanger season finale into a new season the next week. It was all so hodge podge. In fact I’d say there were only 4 shows that we saw a full season from begining to end with out any breaks or timeslot changes. They were Housewives, Greys, Brothers & Sisters and Sea Patrol.
I dont see the problem, as long as none of the wives leaves, the show could easily go 7, if not as many as 10
craig re: 10 minure promo.
i taped that and watched it a few times. they did say october road but there was no mention of fasttracked DH, just “there will desperate housewives” which could have referred to season 4 (as the promo was in Jan.) i’ve heard a few people talking about this “promise” but never seen anything official. i don’t think anything was said on this site which is probably the most reliable. i assume just a rumour.
i would personally prefer to see DH in feb (with a huge promo during aus open) and see the whole season in line, than see it in september and have a 10 week break in the middle and little promo. i say fasttrack crime all u like, but when it comes to serials start in Feb.
does anyone know if the 10min promo will be on again?
I am a huge fan of DH I really enjoy to the show, and too those that say everyone that wants to watch it will download it are kidding yourselves, downloads acccount for a bit but if you actually think the show is going too hundreds of thousands of viewers you have to be kidding.
I download shows but not everyone is as impatient as you may think. I tend to download shows that just don’t air here, or on foxtel that I can’t always find time to watch like Entourage, Dexter etc.
The only two shows at the moment that are airing I’m watching via downloads are “Ugly Betty” because Seven screwed it around and “Fringe” for the same reason.
Craig, i can’t see why they would promise a fast-track 9 months away before the previous season even aired. But i agree that all serial shows should be fast-tracked within a few days, and ones with a larger proportion of younger viewers than others. I can see why you would not want to wait for seven to show a new season Rachael, just like i wasn’t prepared to wait for seven to screen prison break.
I think by the end of season four, the last few episodes were pretty much fast tracked, within two weeks of airing in the US. That was because there was a shortened season due to the writers strike, so we caught up. we saw the final ep of season 4 in early June, it would have finished in the US in late May.
“I have no recollection what so ever of DH promised to being fast tracked….”
Right after the new year fireworks they ran a 10 minute network promo and I think it was in that.
But the also promised October Road and a few other thing which as still to see the light of day.
There are quite a few articles going around suggesting there will be a minimum 2 more seasons. Cherry likes the new direction, and the fresh feel of the series since the 5 year fast forward. He seems to have done a backflip saying Desperate Housewives could actually run a whole lot longer.
I totally agree with Arnold. I am a massive fan of DH and I have been waiting forever for 7 to show it. I couldn’t wait until February to watch it, so I gave in and watched it online.
And even when DH is finally shown on 7, whoever really wanted to watch the show, would have done so already, then they would put it on at a later time slot because loss of viewers and it would soon get taken off air after that.
You can’t trust TV stations to show full seasons nowadays. Its ridiculous.
Mind you, I’ll still watch it on TV when it comes on. I can’t get enough of DH.
I have no recollection what so ever of DH promised to being fast tracked….
Yes, channel 7 did promise to fast track this show (among others) but as usual, they were deceitful. Eps 1-10 of season five are great, screw channel 7 and their lazy incompetent programming department. If they want US shows to air well over here, they need to (pardon my channel 10 language) “seriously fast track” shows so they air within a day or two of the original release. otherwise, people will resort to other avenues to watch their shows
this show is great, its good to see cherry wanting to go out on a high instead of sucking every last drop out of it.
i would like to see it last 9 or 10 years. that seems to be the respectable length.
Can’t wait to see the new season!
This is an excellent news, despite the second season DH has remained strong, stoy wise and ratings wise so Im confident it can keep going.
Didn’t ch7 promises at that start of the year to fast track this show, I remember the promo and still have the copy I recorded.
Jumping the story ahead 5 years was a major risk – it could’ve completely ruined the show, made it completely jump the shark. Hopefully when it returns here in February, there is renewed interest in the show here and we see a slight ratings spike 🙂
