Random Acts Of Karl

Karl Stefanovic will host one of Nine's new 'uplifting' shows for the year.

Karl Stefanovic will host one of Nine’s new 2009 shows, Random Acts Of Kindness next year, described as “heart-warming and feel-good, making dreams come true for deserving Australians.”

The show, one of several ‘uplifting’ shows Nine plans for the year, will also feature Scott Cam.

CEO David Gyngell has plans up his sleeve to use the Today show team in various projects.

“Gyngell has got a bunch of new shows he is throwing out there at the moment,” Stefanovic says.

“So don’t be surprised to see more of the Today show team in various roles for the network, which is good for whatever show that is and the Today show.”

But it could also lead to over-exposure.

Seven has already learned the hard way that having David Koch and Melissa Doyle front every second show is not necessarily good for business. It’s a fine line between cross promotion and overdoing things, especially for personalities who already appear across most of the television year.

  1. just like to say i saw the crew of this show today at my street and they were so rude to me telling me to not watch and step away as we dont want you in the back ground if yous are doing something kind at least try by being nice to people not just buy giving and being rude. i think its ganna be a bad show and mught just go on air for a 1month and then go off.

  2. Hi why are we always kept in the dark about trying to get on shows like this. I have applyed to so many shows about trying to get something special done for our family but have never been successful. Looking forward to this new show love all the hosts but i was very dissappointed when Mcclouds Daughters was cancelled. Good luck

  3. Nine is a mess!!

If they are planning lots of “heartwarming” and “feel good” shows in 2009, why has in my opinion the most heartwarming show that always made me feel good- McLeod’s daughters been axed!?

    Utterly ridiculos!

  4. I watched an hour or so of Carols by Candlelight on Xmas Eve and he was atrocious! To be a personality you should at least have one! Channel 9 is completely irrelevant these days.

  5. Have I turned into an old curmudgeon just because I think the term heart-warming is an insult?

This looks like one more show for me not to watch – Karl will soon compete with Mel and Kochie for most over-used presenters on the tele.

  6. zambora, yes i read that on wikipeadia aswell. you also conveniently left out
“was the fifth most watched television show in that week in Australia. Overall, it averaged 1.3 million viewers in its run”

yes the critics didn’t like it, but that puts it in the same category as big brother, 2.5 men, and border security. but people still like it.

it was never intended to be high quality drama, just entertainment which i thought it was.

on the karl issue, couldn’t they have chosen lisa wilkinson instead, she has a personality

  7. For those that can’t remember the Angels were “Jackie O, Katie Underwood and Simone Kessell” Yes that is kiss of death jackie O as an angel (anyone recall The Nation ?).

It was a shocker show. The good deeds that did were tacky and looked phony.
Thorpe looked as good on screen as Grant Hackett showing emotion reading the sport (okay I know David Tench showed more emotion.
From wilikpedia “The three “angels” travelled in Alfa Romeos performing deeds such as decorating a nursery for a young couple with newborn children, and finding a replacement puppy for children whose dog had been stolen.

    – if you scan Seven’s schedule late at night say 2 am you might find UA hovering.

It was widely panned by media critics, with the Sydney Morning Herald television critic Ruth Ritchie declaring it “the worst show in the history of the world””

  8. OMG i completely forgot about undercover angels. that show was great, and yes this sounds very similar.

from what i remember it was 3 really hot girls that were made out to look like charlies angels (during the charlies angels craze) did bizarre things to raise money for people, and thorpie was like charlie. it wasn’t the best quality but it was quite entertaining, and it realy mastered when to have serious touching tearjerking moments. it was something for everyone. why doesn’t 7 redo shows like that.

RAOK sounds like a much boringer version though
i guess the hosts won’t do many favours (karl=personality of door), although i would like to see how simone does. it looks like the type of show where we just watch bogans cry for 30 mins.

  9. does anyone remember “undercover angels” hosted by ian thorpe on 7. this show seems very similar. only with out the undercover part and charlies angels bits.

it also sounds a bit like thankyou that only had 1 episode filmed before the olympics on 7, it didn’t work.

simone is a great choice i loved her character on mcleods which will fit in well with this role. i’m not quite sure about karl and scott cam, they just don’t have the heart or warmth. what about jason dundas (getaway) and livinia nixon, now that she doesn’t have a big job << i think they have so much potential, people love them and they are underused and fresh, instead we get same old karl and scott.

i watched that youtube vid. i think 9 are taking the warmheart thing too far. just because two of their few good raters (farmerWAW, DomesticB) are warmhearts. i think this could backfire and people will turn their back on all of them

  10. They shot one episode of this in Orange – it was all about a woman who was celebrating her wedding anniversary (obviously a big one!) and they had decided to renew their vows. This woman has also been heavily involved in raising money for the community so it was a feel good episode. Simone Jade whatsit was in attendance.

  11. I throw these types of fly-on-the-wall shows in the basket with factual shows, which are used far too often in network schedules, and are quite boring actually. I guess a random act of kindness would be a quite a large change from the nature of channel nine. Hopefully for them, people don’t put two and two together.

  12. Karl, if you have time to do crap like this you’re obviously not doing your Today show job properly.

How about some hard hitting interviews or investigative journalism instead of this wallpaper you call a show. When you take out the structured “content” of each half hour (news update/weather/banter) which is basically just the same content repeated 7 times over, we’re left with about 15 minutes of actual content every morning.

I know morning TV will never be Four Corners but what we have now is disposable junk.

  13. This begs the question, why. Not withstanding that a heartfelt show like this would require someone with an actual heart, not this R2D2 of a host.

Seriously, why can’t CVC turn off Channel Nine’s life support and let this abomination of a network die a quick death.

  14. Smells like desperation corner to me.
Karl does not appeal to me in any way.
    His hosting skills are deplorable.
Has no warmth and seems like a smug so and so.
Put him as host and people will turn off !

  15. This isn’t exactly breaking news!

If you go onto YOUTUBE, type in “Choose Nine In 09.” This is a twenty mintue promo of many shows to appear on NINE in 2009.

The promos have been really well done, and there are loads of new shows, and heaps of Australian shows as well. However, The Block has not been shown in this promo, instead the new show from the creators of The Block ‘Home Run.’ What I don’t get is for Home Run they are saying from the creators of the Block, and they also did the same for The Chopping Block. If they want to create a show that works, why don’t they just create The Block!!!!!! However, the promos are great and it looks so promising.

  16. Isn’t this just like Seven using their Sunrise presenters on every other show on the network? How about something original.

I’m also assuming this will be another renovation show, or something, for people that have gotten ill/had something happen to them.

  17. “heart-warming and feel-good, making dreams come true for deserving Australians.” They’ve done up their backyards, renovated their houses,… What are they moving on to next I wonder? 😉
