Sherlock Holmes gets UK remake

British screenwriter Steven Moffat, known for both Dr. Who and Jekyll, will turn his attention to Sherlock Holmes.

Steven Moffat sure is going to be a busy boy. Not only will the UK Writer be taking over Doctor Who from Russell T. Davies, but he’s set to adapt a modern-day version of Sherlock Holmes.

If it’s anything as good as Jekyll that can only be good news.

The one-off 60-minute drama is described by the BBC as a “thrilling, funny, fast-paced take” on the Holmes story set in present-day London. But the names, Holmes’s address – 221B Baker Street – and the villain, Moriarty, will remain the same.

“Everything that matters about Holmes and Watson is the same,” said Moffat. “Conan Doyle’s original stories were never about frock coats and gaslight; they’re about brilliant detection, dreadful villains and blood-curdling crimes – and frankly, the hell with the crinoline.

“Other detectives have cases, Sherlock Holmes has adventures and that’s what matters. Mark and I have been talking about this project for years, on long train rides to Cardiff for Doctor Who. Quite honestly we’d still be talking about it if Sue Vertue of Hartswood Films (conveniently, also my wife) hadn’t sat us down for lunch and got us to work.”

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and The Office’s Martin Freeman it begins filming next month.

  1. Forget the same old! same old! that comes out of the US these days … none of it can beat what is coming out of the UK now … in particular the brilliance of Doctor Who, Merlin and of course this new show which is sure to be brilliant …

    Jack!

  2. I thought Jekyll was great until eps 4&5 went to a weird, weird place and the terrible American accents spoiled what was left of a great idea. Still, I love Steve Moffat and can’t wait to see what he’ll do with Mr Holmes.
