Former Age television critic, Dennis Prior, has died unexpectedly aged 83.

Former Age television critic Dennis Pryor, who wrote for the newspaper for more than 20 years, has died unexpectedly. He was 83.

Pryor, who migrated to Australia from Britain in 1951, taught in Queensland before moving to Melbourne in the mid-1960s to become a classics lecturer at Melbourne University.

In the late ’70s, he was lured to The Age from The Australian, for which he wrote a television column. His weekly column for this newspaper earned respect, readership and healthy criticism inside and outside the television industry.

The death of Pryor follows the passing of other television critics in the last two years including Ross Warneke, Brian Courtis, Robert Fidgeon and Tony Johnston.

  1. I have just learned of the passing of this great lecturer. He held classes at CAE for some time. He always had time to talk of his young sons and was never afraid to show his emotions. He has now joined another tutor that we also respected and I imagine that they have a geeat deal to discuss.

  2. Dennis Pryor’s TV column usually appeared in the Saturday liftouts in The Age (Saturday Extra and then A2) until 1-2 years ago.
Another legendary TV critic sadly gone.
