Airdate: Code Geass

In this alternate world the planet is divided into two -ruled by Britannia and China. Australia remains neutral to both.

Nice to see a bit of anime making tis way back to television. SBS has dabbled in this genre before but now it’s the ABC who has Code Geass.

Code Geass is set in an alternate universe where the Holy Empire of Britannia, an international superpower, has conquered more than a third of the planet. The world is, for the most part, divided between it and two other superpowers: the Chinese Federation and the Euro Universe. Australia has remained independent of the other powers though it is not significantly mentioned in the story.

The series is directed by Gorō Taniguchi and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi and premieres 9:30pm Monday January 19 on ABC2.

Press Release:

On August 10 of the Common Era, the Holy Empire of Britannia invaded Japan. In order to take the mainland, the Britannian uses giant robots called Knightmare Frames.

The Japanese defences fell one after another before the might of Project Knightmare. Japan became a territory of the Empire and was stripped of its freedom, rights, and even its name. Japan is now referred to as Area 11 and its people, the Elevens.

Lelouch Lamperouge is a young prince of Britannia living in Japan. He is stripped of his title and is in hiding. He has gained the power of Geass – the power of absolute obedience which makes anyone obey any order. With this new found power Lelouch is determined to destroy the Holy Empire of Britannia, to avenge the death of his mother and to create a world where his sister Nunally, can live peacefully.

He becomes ‘Zero’, a hero to the Japanese, a terrorist to the empire.

  1. This is one thing I can only praise. I love anime. I used to love SBS for showing excellent shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Crisis, as well as many movies including some Ghibli masterpieces, but sadly in the last few years they haven’t shown anything new, just some repeats of repeats.
Late 2007 (IIRC), I got my first STB. I was amazed to find that ABC2 was showing Cowboy Bebop. Since then they have shown several other animes, previously Death Note and now Code Geass.
I love you ABC2! Keep it up! I rate them higher than the commercial networks simply because they are willing to show stuff like this.
