George Negus hints at retirement

Legendary journo Negus says he will start winding down in the next few years.

First it was Ray Martin. Oh wait.

Then it was Mike Munro. Oh wait.

Well George Negus reckons he’s thinking about retirement -but just not yet.

Negus, who fronts Dateline for SBS, says he’ll consider winding down “in the next few years”.

“I certainly don’t want to be wheeled into the studio in a wheel chair,” Negus told news.com.au

He indicates a “gear shift” and possibly time with family overseas (hmm Munro said the same thing).

“Maybe not next week or next month but certainly in the next few years,” Negus said.

Meanwhile he returns with Dateline soon, now on a new night: Sundays at 8:30pm.

Last year SBS News exec, Paul Cutler, said, “George Negus and the video journalists consistently produce outstanding international current affairs you won’t see anywhere else, and their unique perspective on the world will now screen on a bigger night of the week.”

  1. Dateline on Sundays at 8:30pm seems like a bad move to me. It’s relaxation time before Mondayitis – No one want serious stories at that time of the night/week (even if it is good quality journalism!).
