Happy New Year!

2009 promises more digital channels, Freeview, Eddie, Karl and Sonia. And you thought your head hurt already?

Happy 2009 from TV Tonight!

Hope your head doesn’t hurt too much today -unless of course it was really worth it.

Thanks to everyone who participated in helping the site go from strength to strength in 2008, and I look forward to dissecting another year of the best and worst in Australian television with you once more.

As TV Tonight approaches its second birthday next week, it is well and truly on the map in the industry, read by fans, media, on air personalities and network execs alike.

January 1st mark the day our networks can officially launch secondary digital channels. Freeview is also planned for this year and we’re expecting some clarity on the future of ABC and SBS. Today is also your last chance to vote for this site’s annual awards, winner will be announced next week.

This year promises confident second seasons of Underbelly, Packed to the Rafters, So You Think You Can Dance, The Gruen Transfer, The Circuit and Rush. But we’re also due for more Eddie McGuire, Karl Stefanovic, Sonia Kruger and a little less from Kyle. And no doubt more programming nightmares to keep us all on our toes.

With the silly season still lingering, TV Tonight remains in summer mode with moderate updating of news.

Look forward to hearing what grabs your attention on the box as the year rolls on!

David.

  1. This year I will be watching very little free-to-air. Movies and TV series will come from DVDs or downloads. 2008 destroyed any faith I had left in the networks.

    Have a great year, everyone!

  2. happy 2009 everyone.

as far as tv goes; the new shows have delivered a new low of unexcitement but there are some returning shows i am looking foreward to.

although in the past few hours i have developed an excitement for spielburg and tom hanks “the pacific”. part was filmed at my school so i am practically famous now.

i can’t wait to see how sunday night, missing pieces, and thank got you’re here rate because there were so many speculations and controversies from this site (not necessarily in a good way.) i’ll hope there is minimal programming changes, but if there is, at least we will have something to talk about.

  3. Happy New Year David and everyone!! Stay safe and well, and here’s to 09. May the networks bring us more first run episodes of qualiy shows, less repeats and fewer reality crap filler shows.

Looking forward to Lost, 24, and another year of TvTonight. Thanks David 🙂

  4. And a Happy New Year to David and all the best to the loyal readers of this site.
Zam is looking forward to more of The Gruen Transfer, more quality stuff on ABC and SBS.Will be looking at change of networks for Thank God You’re Here -will it be compromised.
However not looking forward to more Karl Stefanovic or Sonia Kruger nor all the programming nightmares.
Would like to to see “the supposed best in TV delivering on their promises to be the best in TV (without the spin)
Nof looking forward to all the silly promo photo shoots for “tv celebs or wannabes”

Hopefully, the best thing in ’09 will be David keeping it real here and the loyal readers posting honest opinion.
P.S. Network execs, we are watching, maybe we might tell your advertisers what we think of you.

  5. Happy New Year to you too David. All I hope for in 2009 when it comes to the free to air networks is to not keep moving their shows around or stopping them altogether. At least you keep us posted on what’s going on because the networks don’t care to share what’s happening!

  6. update on the ch7 promo they ran right after the new year fireworks, they has a intro with lots of different shows on a big wall and on re-watching it I noticed October Road was there, now that’s just cruel!

  7. As an average viewer, I think 2009 is a cruical year for the main T.V. stations. If they can’t get mass viewer attention at this time, they never will.

  8. I noticed Channel Seven wasvery self-serving in their New Years Eve coverage. Literally after the fireworks they cut to their hosts who introduced the new year and then said that this coming year was going to be a big year for seven, then cut to a five minute advert for Seven. Subtle…

Though, they did seem to have a lot of US shows on their agenda. Any chance they’ve released a full list? I look forward to this year, I think the networks have a lot of viewer trust to gain back. I don’t know if it was due to the writer’s strike or just because the networks have become really cutthroat (or maybe a bit of both), but 2008 was a really boring year in terms of programming and shows. Here’s to a better year in 2009!

  9. @ Evan,

I know that. They have had that since midnight, where it debuted on 7’s coverage of Melbourne’s NYE fireworks. But could Love You Queensland be replaced soon by Love You Brisbane, the original 7 slogan from the mid 80’s? Also for the Perth commenters, has this watermark shown up on TVW-7 (i.e Seven Perth)?

  10. Hi David,
Read tvtonight website everyday, love all your updates, keeps us better informed than the newspaper media pages.I am finally glad Jan ’09 has arrived as regards to multichannelling, eventhough we still don’t know what seven and nine are planning on showing hopefully, it will be some decent alternative programming, guess we can only wait and see in the coming months.
Happy New Year to all readers of TvTonight.

  11. Hi everyone and happy new year.

I want fasttrack on 7 for new series of 24 season 7 on this month as US start on 11 January. Less crap TV shows and put new shows on.
Oops, I want Fringe, Knight Rider back on and what happen to it????

  12. After a fantastic night out in the city of Sydney watching the fireworks. Ive watched my recording this morning of the efforts of channel 10 last night for the 9pm fireworks … Cheerleaders?? What the??….

“Oh Sydney you’re so fine , you’re so fine you blow my mind Hey Sydney ! *clap clap* Hey Sydney! ”

    *shakes head*

  13. Happy new year everyone!

I have absolutely zero faith that our FTA networks will have a sudden realization that their industry is in real danger, and will continue to drive more people away with moronic decisions this year. If they are smart, they will check this site during the year and actually listen and take on board the ideas from David and the readers.

  14. So in 2008 what happened to Knight Rider and October Road on ch7?

Thank god I didn’t wait for them, seen all of or and liked it, pity it ended too soon IMO. And a friend is sending me the first half of KR.

Anyone else see the 5 minute clip right after new year that ch7 played for the coming TV year, any news on Cupid which looks good.

  15. i don’t hold out much hope for 2009 unfortunately, 2007 was great with heaps of shows i loved doing well and being treated well, 2008 was the glory year for HD stations it is downhill from here it seems, but 2009 while introducing new SD channels from indications so far it does not look like what they are offering is up my alley. foxtel has got all the good shows so i will probably end up waiting for the dvds and renting/buying them, so 2009 for me will probably be a year of dvds not tv.

but don’t let me be a wet-blanket downer that brings the rest of you down with me, enjoy yourselves and happy new year, i may end up being wrong anyway the stations may turn good later in the year and surprise me, there is always hope. and thanks for all your hard work in 2008 david it is greatly appreciated and wishing you all the best in 2009.

  16. Happy New Year David and readers!
My new years resolution is to watch less crap TV, and watch more quality downloads… Until FTA get their act into gear like iView, they can say goodbye to this viewer.
    Have a good year folks…
