Not-so-Superstars of Dance?

Spoiler: Here's how Team Australia, and more particularly the first episode of NBC's Superstars of Dance, fared.

Team Australia did ok, possibly better than the show itself, in Sunday’s debut episode of NBC’s Superstars of Dance.

Henry Byalikov and Giselle Pecock performed an aggressive number around a chair, which you can see here. It struck me as rather Euro in flavour.

Their specialty is ballroom and also do what I’m thinking is a Samba. They’re a great looking couple and have really good technique. Their chemistry isn’t as palpable as Pasha & Anya but there was some fire. I wouldn’t mind seeing them dance again.
Score: 56 (8-8-8-8-8-8-8)

Australian Dance Theatre (pictured) also performed.

Sunday’s episode attracted 10.07 million viewers, beating The Unit (9.73 mil) and Brothers & Sisters with 9.16 mil, but the vibe online isn’t so good.

But word of mouth for the show has been lukewarm. One blogger said “Superstars of Dance had everything. Which might sound like an exaggeration, but it was as if the producers feared that if the folks at home weren’t being absolutely dazzled into submission, they would remember that they were grown-ups and didn’t need to watch the equivalent of a circus from their living rooms.”

TVGuide readers said:

-The dancing show was a crashing bore. Yaaaawwwwwwnnnnn!

-The show is terrible and some of the judges are not internationally informed about dance. Some of the dancers are quite bad! This is a waste!

-I agree with those who thought Superstars… was horrible!. What an utter waste of time. I can’t bear to watch another episode. It should be cancelled forthwith.

-I am interested to see how Monday’s ratings will be for the dance show…I figure they will tank badly….very badly. I watched on Sunday to see if there was anything worth watching, but I couldn’t handle watching over 5 minutes last night.

-Superstars of Dance is terrible, when does Chuck come back?

Australia finished fourth for the night. A second episode followed on Monday.

Nine is yet to announce the airdate for the show.

  1. well now that 9 are clearing out mcleods our best bet is that it will start on saturday 7:30 in 3 weeks. nobody watched dance machine a few weeks back in that time slot. i know this is much higher quality and budget but it’s not a good indication.

  2. This is the problem when shows are not fast tracked from the US, especially reality TV shows.

The hype of the show starts, then while we are waiting for it mediocre reviews come in which means we are not as enthusiastic to watch it. Or another show grabs our attentions.

Channel 9 need to screen this and fast to ensure there are semi decent ratings for it.

  3. it wasn’t that bad although I don’t think it will be a big here in Oz unless of course if Australia wins and ch9 will broadcast it during Australia day, lol.

  4. just looking at that vid it did not look good at all. i’d say 9 will put it on saturday, 10:30, or chicken out and sell it to foxtel.

i wonder how much 9 spent on it? it looks high budget, and they don’t exactly have money to splash around. they might have to cut some more jobs.

  5. Had spare 5 minutes, checked out LA times site.
David is being nice with his comment “Lukewarm”
Scathing, woeful or deplorable seems to be general comment in USA.
The reviewers themselves across USA newspapers were mixed but most said alot will depend on which country you live in and who (you the viewer) is interested in.
Most bloggers and reviewers said “just another dance show, nothing new”

  6. woo..”knoxoverstreet” getting touchy are we.
David just reported general reaction. He stated it got biggest TV audience on night but response afterwards was not great.
Obviously some folk liked show, some hated it – what do you want, something from each category.BTW, nice to see you still ignore Nine’s programming changes threads.

  7. I’m still interested in checking it out. It’d be different to see dancers from around the world compete, rather than just one nation’s. Now if only Nine would get off their asses and schedule this show, but I don’t think that will happen
