Nine announces a two hour telethon to air on Thursday night to raise funds for bushfire victims.

marysvilleChannel Nine will stage a two hour telethon this Thursday night, in response to the Victorian Bushfires.

Australia Unites will air from 8:30 – 10:30pm, hosted by Eddie McGuire. It will feature entertainers, athletes and personalities.

Updated: So far 183 lives have been lost in Australia’s worst natural disaster.

At least 750 homes have been destroyed and more than 330,000 hectares burnt out, while authorities said some fires could take weeks to contain.

Nine CEO David Gyngell said, “All Australians have been affected by the enormity of this tragedy, and we are putting all our support behind the victims and their families to help them rebuild their lives.”

GTV9 Manager Jeffrey Browne added, “From all of us at Nine, we express our condolences to those who have lost family, friends, property, pets and in a significant number of cases, the certainty of their immediate futures.”

The Nine family has been personally touched by the tragedy after veteran newsreader Brian Naylor and his wife Moiree perished in their family home at Kinglake north of Melbourne.

Donations will go to the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund. To make a donation go to www.redcross.org.au, call the toll free number 1800 811 700 or donate via the Commonwealth Bank.

  1. Some pretty pathetic comments about Eddie McGuide and Ch9 in here. I see the tall poppy syndrome is a live and well. I have nothing to do with Ch9, or Eddie.

You are a sad bunch of cynical people. I will actually be attending the telethon as part of the audience.

Maybe you should be all question what the other TV stations are doing to help raise more money. Get over yourselves.

  2. Its purely just a rating grab by channel nine.
hell Triple M had a appeal that went from like 10am to 6pm tuesday and got almost 2 million I think,
and channel 9 broadcast the cricket for 7 odd hours that had an appeal going and raised a stack of coin, with heaps of companies chipping in and giving money.
and thats just two that I know of….
and its not like people haven’t been giving money anyway….
if they were in for it truely to “raise money” why not do it wednesday night?????
ohh nah…. just happens thursday night is proberly their low rating night

also… why not raise money for queensland, as everyone has already stated?

  3. Bundynelle,
A edited piece from that article, that David reported on a few days back.

“Leading media buyer and analyst Ian Warner, of Universal McCann, suggested Nine – along with their commercial TV rivals – had little regard for the Queensland market, putting it a distant third behind Sydney and Melbourne.

“The networks don’t really care about a market which only counts for 18 per cent. All that matters is Sydney and Melbourne. But, if we had daylight saving in Queensland, then none of this would be an issue.”

The problem is no means endemic to 9. Just ask the Queenslanders who got so close to winning Australian Idol, only for southern phone lines to beat them at the end.

And also, I am sick of Mexican execs, referring to the Brisbane TV market as the “Queensland market”. The last time I checked “Queensland market” meant the aggregated market running from Cairns to the Sunshine Coast and out to the Darling Downs.

  4. Kuttsywood – ha ha ha, call QTQ you say – yeah right! Oh yeah, I can see them sitting up and listening to us whilst the pigs are flying backwards! Us Qlders have been force fed delayed coverage for years and its not going to change. Australia Unites but not all at once!

  5. I think it’s great that Channel 9 is raising money; and I don’t care if Eddies does his bit to help out. Does anyone know if there are any ways for us regular folk to get involved as volunteers for this event?

  6. Kuttsywood – CH9 are once again doing a sneaky. You are correct in saying that they haven’t put up a time on their TV ads, however ads for “The Singing Bee” do have the time of Thursday 7.30pm. Also the online TV Guide on Courier Mail website also states 7.30pm Singing Bee 8.30 Australia Unites.

So I guess us Qlders get the good ol’ one hour delayed coverage yet again. Yep CH9 “Australia Unites” but QLD will join you an hour later! Idiots! How ruddy hard is it CH9??

  7. Good on 9 for the telethon, but don’t agree with the idea of having it on every channel. There are already numerous events on to raise money. Most people who are going to donate will do so anyway and participate in fund raising events, etc.

Saw at my local Coles that all profits on Friday going to the Bushfire appeal and on their web site. We’ll be doing our weekly shopping on Friday instead of Thursday.
