The day after the Oscars screen in Oz (MondayFebruary 23rd), SBS will screen a documentary of the life of Harvey Milk, The Times of Harvey Milk.
Milk was the first openly-gay politician in the US, who was assassinated in 1978. Sean Penn portrays Milk in the film of the same title, and a hot contender for this year’s Best Actor. He has already won a Screen Actor’s Guild award for his performance.
The SBS documentary won a 1985 Oscar for Best Documentary. It documents Milk’s life leading up to his election, his successful efforts to politically represent San Francisco’s gay community, and the city’s reaction to the assassinations with extensive news film and personal recollections. It is narrated by Harvey Fierstein.
It airs at 10pm on Tuesday 24th February.

Thanks for telling us about this David. I can’t wait to watch.
Harvey Milk was a District Supervisor in San Fransisco – the mayor was George Moscone, who was assassinated along with Milk.
Also, Mickey Rourke won the Golden Globe; clearly he stole it from Penn! 😛
Nevertheless, it’s a brilliant and moving documentary. Can’t wait to see it again!
This is an excellent documentary and will be a great companion piece to the new film just out. 10 out of 10 from me…:)
thanks David for letting us know about this.. the current movie “Milk” is excellent (hopefully Sean Penn will win the oscar !) and left me wanting to know more about Harvey Milk’s life so i cant wait to see this !!
David, I believe you mean the date of the Oscars screening in Australia is Monday February 23rd, not November 23rd.
